Magnitude 3.9 Earthquake Shakes Northern California, Triggers Alerts Across Bay Area

Tremor Recorded Near Dublin

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck Northern California on Monday evening at 7:46 p.m. local time. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the epicentre was located less than a mile from Dublin.

Shaking Felt Across the Region

The earthquake impacted multiple cities, including Pleasanton, San Ramon, Castro Valley, and Hayward. Residents in San Francisco, Fremont, and Richmond reported experiencing weak shaking. According to USGS data, moderate shaking occurred in Dublin and near Concord.

Meteorologist Rob Mayeda described the tremor’s effects in Danville. “Felt a quick initial jolt here in Danville along with a little bit of a roll, enough to get the glasses rattling in the cabinets,” he said.

Depth and Location

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.3 miles. USGS data places the epicentre approximately 2.9 miles from Dublin and 3.8 miles from Fairview.

ShakeAlert System Activated

The ShakeAlert system detected the earthquake and issued alerts to nearby residents. No reports of significant damage or injuries have emerged.

Seismic Activity in California

In the last 10 days, one earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater has occurred in the area. On average, California and Nevada experience 25 earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 each year.

Historical Context

California remains seismically active due to its proximity to major fault lines, including the San Andreas Fault. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.9, caused between 700 and 3,000 fatalities. The disaster led to the introduction of stricter building codes and regulations.

The Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 also registered a magnitude of 7.9, making it one of the strongest quakes in California’s history.

Largest Recorded Earthquake in the U.S.

The most powerful earthquake recorded in the United States struck Alaska in 1964. The magnitude 9.2 event near Anchorage caused extensive damage and generated tsunamis.

Preparedness and Reporting

Authorities encourage residents to report their experiences to USGS. Those interested in earthquake preparedness can sign up for the Unshaken newsletter, which provides emergency preparedness tips over six weeks.

California’s seismic activity remains a concern, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and monitoring systems like ShakeAlert.
