Plastic Contamination Triggers Nationwide Ice Cream Recall From Wells Enterprises Across 22 Varieties

Plastic Contamination Triggers Nationwide Ice Cream Recall From Wells Enterprises Across 22 Varieties

Wells Enterprises has issued a voluntary recall of 22 frozen dessert products. The Iowa-based company, also known as Wells Dairy, initiated the recall on 25 April. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified it as a Class II recall. This classification indicates a risk of temporary or medically reversible health consequences.

Plastic Contamination Prompts Action

The recall involves the possible presence of hard plastic in ice cream and frozen yoghurt. This foreign material can cause dental injuries or choking. The company distributed the affected products to 103 centres across the United States. These include restaurants, cafeterias and food service operations. The items are all packed in 3-gallon containers.

Health Experts Warn of Safety Risks

Professor Byron D. Chaves from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln provided insight. He said, “Making ice cream at an industrial scale involves several steps, such as blending and adding inclusions, like toppings, during which foreign material contamination can occur. Hard plastic, for example, may originate from ingredients like toppings or from utensils such as mixing paddles. Such incidents can indicate a breach in supplier controls and good manufacturing practices. In rare cases, packaging materials may be the source. Ice cream tubes are typically made of high-density polyethylene, which resists cracking under freezing conditions. However, lids can occasionally break and introduce foreign material.”

He continued, “Extraneous material may become a physical hazard and cause lacerations (cuts), occlusion (choking) and other injuries to the tongue, gums and teeth. These hazards are problematic in ready-to-eat products, like ice cream. However, the recall was classified as Class II, so not the highest risk level. This makes me think that either the product is not in retail yet, potentially distribution centres or warehouses where it can be more easily retrieved, or that the pieces might be large enough for the consumer to see them and avoid them.”
