Queensland To Face Severe Thunderstorms After Brisbane Rainbomb

A severe thunderstorm warning with damaging winds, heavy rain, and large hailstones has been issued for Queensland today. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) identified Gympie, South Burnett, and Cherbourg as areas most likely to face dangerous weather conditions.

Brisbane Weather Alert as Storms Continue

Brisbane weather turned extreme as a rainbomb hit the city and nearby areas overnight. Heavy rainfall of up to 72mm lashed parts of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Wild winds also damaged properties, leading to over 20 call-outs to the State Emergency Service (SES).

BoM warned, “The thunderstorm is moving towards the northeast. It is forecast to affect Wondai and the area north of Kingaroy by 11.20am (AEST) and the area northwest of Murgon by 11.50am.

Severe Storms Impact South Burnett and Surrounding Areas

The severe thunderstorms eased by 12 pm (AEST), but BoM warned storms could redevelop, especially around South Burnett. Earlier, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, and the Southern Downs experienced intense weather conditions.

A fierce hailstorm battered these regions early today after a storm alert was issued at 6 am. BoM remains on alert for further storm activity in inland Queensland over the next few days.

Rainbomb Causes Cleanup Efforts in Brisbane and Gold Coast

The rainbomb that struck Brisbane and the Gold Coast overnight left significant rainfall and wild winds in its wake. Brisbane weather saw flash flooding, and SES responded to multiple call-outs.

Authorities continue cleanup efforts in affected regions, with emergency services urging residents to remain cautious. More severe weather could affect Brisbane and surrounding areas later in the week.

Parts of New South Wales (NSW) also experienced severe rainfall following a scorching New Year heatwave. Nearly half a month’s worth of rain soaked Sydney in just 24 hours.

Weatherzone reported 45mm of rain fell between Wednesday and Thursday morning. The current wet weather pattern is expected to continue throughout the week.

Thunderstorms threaten the Northern Tablelands and Northern Rivers, with BoM warning of possible severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall as the system progresses eastward.

Victoria Prepares for Thunderstorms and Extreme Heat

Victoria will also experience storm activity today. Western parts of the state expect moderate thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile, parts of Victoria swelter under above-average temperatures. Mildura reached 35 degrees today, while Melbourne and Geelong remained around 31 degrees.

Ongoing Weather Risks and Warnings

The Bureau of Meteorology continues monitoring Queensland weather as conditions remain unstable. BoM urges residents in Brisbane, Gold Coast, and inland Queensland to stay updated on weather warnings.
