As the rest of the nation dons red and white for Canada Day, Montrealers can anticipate a largely subdued public holiday, with widespread closures and reduced services across the city. While festive spirits may still be found in bustling urban pockets, residents are advised to plan ahead for a day of limited access to many usual amenities.

Government and Financial Institutions to Close Doors

Federal and provincial government offices, including Service Canada locations and passport offices, will observe the statutory holiday, remaining closed throughout Tuesday. Similarly, all major bank branches across the city will be shut, with in-person banking services resuming on Wednesday. Canada Post will also suspend all mail delivery and pickup services for the day.

Municipal services will largely follow suit. Borough halls, permit counters, and Accès Montréal offices will not be open to the public. Municipal courts will also be closed, with the sole exception of detainee court proceedings, which will continue in Room R.40. Residents are encouraged to utilize online services for any urgent administrative needs.

Retail and Grocery: A Mixed Bag

Shopping enthusiasts will find most major shopping centres and big-box retailers shuttered for Canada Day. This includes popular destinations like the Eaton Centre and Carrefour Laval, as well as big-box stores such as IKEA, Winners, Home Sense, and Canadian Tire.

Grocery store hours will vary significantly by chain and location. While some independent grocers and smaller chains might maintain modified hours, major players like IGA, Provigo, Super C, Metro, and Maxi are expected to either operate on reduced schedules or close entirely. Shoppers are strongly advised to check with their local store for specific Canada Day hours before heading out.

Pharmacies, however, will largely remain open, though their hours may also be subject to variations.

Alcohol and Cannabis Sales Halted

Those looking to stock up on libations will face limitations. While some SAQ (Société des alcools du Québec) outlets may remain open, many will be closed. It is recommended to verify with your local SAQ store. Notably, all SQDC (Société québécoise du cannabis) cannabis shops across the province will be closed for the entire day, a measure consistent with past holidays.

Getting Around: Reduced Transit and Parking Considerations

Public transit across the Montreal region will operate on a reduced schedule. The STM’s buses and métro will adhere to a holiday timetable. Both the RTL and STL will also offer diminished service. Exo commuter trains will follow a Sunday schedule, and the REM will run from 5:30 a.m. to 8:40 p.m. Commuters are advised to consult their respective transit authority’s websites for detailed schedules to avoid delays.

For motorists, holiday restrictions on parking will remain in effect. Drivers should pay close attention to posted signs to avoid fines.

Leisure and Entertainment: canada Open for Business

Despite the widespread closures, several popular recreational and cultural sites will be open to welcome Montrealers. Most restaurants, cafés, and bars, especially in vibrant areas such as downtown, the Plateau, and Old Montreal, are expected to remain open, offering dining and social options.

The city’s renowned public markets – Jean-Talon, Atwater, and Maisonneuve – will also be open, though their hours may be reduced.

For those seeking educational and engaging experiences, all Espace pour la Vie institutions will be operating. This includes the Biodôme, Botanical Garden, Planetarium, Insectarium, and Biosphère, offering a fantastic opportunity for families and individuals to connect with nature and science.

However, the operating hours for library branches, community centres, and public pools may be modified or closed entirely, and residents are encouraged to check their borough’s website for specific details on these facilities.

As Montreal observes Canada Day, a combination of planned closures and reduced services will define the urban landscape. By being informed and planning ahead, residents can navigate the holiday smoothly and make the most of what remains open for celebration and leisure.
