Fantasy Series Ends with Season Three
Amazon Prime Video has cancelled The Wheel of Time after three seasons. The announcement ends the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s popular fantasy novels. The series followed Moiraine, played by Rosamund Pike, who belonged to the powerful female group Aes Sedai.
Moiraine travelled with five young people, one of whom was destined to become the Dragon Reborn. Rand al’Thor, portrayed by Josha Stradowski, discovered he was the prophesied figure during Season 2.
Final Season Receives Positive Response
Season 3 showed Rand’s struggle as forces of good and evil tried to sway him. Moiraine and Egwene al’Vere, played by Madeleine Madden, fought to guide him.
The series also featured Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Marcus Rutherford, Dónal Finn, Ceara Coveney, Kate Fleetwood, Natasha O’Keeffe, Ayoola Smart, Kae Alexander and Sophie Okonedo.
Creative Team Behind the Production
Rafe Judkins adapted the series and served as showrunner. Judkins also worked as an executive producer alongside Pike, Rick Selvage, Larry Mondragon, Ted Field, Mike Weber, Marigo Kehoe, Ciaran Donnelly, Justine Juel Gillmer and Dave Hill.
The series was co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
Viewership Declined Despite Better Reviews
Amazon’s decision followed declining viewership numbers, even as Season 3 received improved feedback. Fans and critics praised the third season’s storytelling and character development.
Earlier seasons faced criticism, but the show gained traction over time. Season 1 struggled to impress, while Season 2 marked a noticeable improvement.
Adaptation Inspired Readers to Return to the Books
The third season encouraged renewed interest in the original novels. Viewers, including long-time fans, began revisiting the books by Jordan and co-author Brandon Sanderson.
One viewer shared that Season 3 “was so good” it motivated them to resume reading the novels, despite earlier difficulties engaging with them.
Show Diverged from Source Material
The television adaptation made several changes from the original series. However, many fans accepted the alterations as part of creating compelling television.
The show starred Pike as Moiraine Damodred, Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Finn as Mat Cauthon, and Coveney as Elayne Trakand.
Iwot Studios Developing Related Video Game
In April, Variety reported Iwot Studios was developing a video game based on The Wheel of Time. The game aims to build on the series’ global reach.
Iwot Studios announced a three-year development cycle for the game. The studio said the game was “intended to build on the global success” of the series.

Comparisons with Amazon’s Other Fantasy Series
The cancellation drew comparisons with The Rings of Power, Amazon’s other high-profile fantasy series. Despite sharp viewership decline, Amazon renewed The Rings of Power.
Fans criticised Amazon’s decision to cancel The Wheel of Time while continuing The Rings of Power. Viewers described The Wheel of Time as the “wildly superior” show.
Streaming Decisions Spark Viewer Disappointment
The cancellation surprised fans who had supported the show through earlier struggles. The news left many questioning Amazon’s streaming strategy.
Critics suggested the decision could reflect corporate priorities, not audience satisfaction or content quality. The streaming giant has not released comment on the cancellation rationale.
Legacy Continues Through Novels and New Media
Despite the cancellation, The Wheel of Time books remain in print and widely read. The series continues to influence readers and fantasy fans globally.
Viewers disappointed by the show’s end have returned to the novels. Some expressed hope that other fantasy series, like Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law, receive better adaptations.
Amazon Silent on Future Fantasy Projects
Amazon has not confirmed whether it will pursue new fantasy adaptations. The platform remains under scrutiny for its programming choices.
The cancellation of The Wheel of Time highlights the challenges fantasy series face in the streaming landscape. The show ends with Season 3, now marking its final chapter.
