Know the New Pope: Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pontiff as Pope Leo XIV

Know the New PopeRobert Prevost Becomes First American Pontiff as Pope Leo XIV

History has been made at the Vatican as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. In doing so, he becomes the first American-born pope, a milestone that reflects the evolving face of global Catholicism.

A Humble Beginning in Chicago

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV brings a unique blend of American spirit, deep spirituality, and international pastoral experience. Long admired for his humility and intellect, Prevost’s elevation marks a moment of both change and continuity for the Church.

A Man of Faith and Service

“He’s always been a man who listens first, speaks last, and serves always,” said Father Art Purcaro, a close friend who has known him for decades. “He never sought the spotlight—but he has always been guided by his faith.”

A Key Vatican Role Before Papacy

Before ascending to the papacy, Prevost served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the most powerful offices in the Vatican, where he helped select bishops across the world. He also spent over a decade as a missionary and bishop in Peru, where he became known for walking alongside the people in both faith and hardship.

A Pope for the Global Church

A polyglot fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, Leo XIV is expected to bring a pastoral, inclusive tone to the papacy, with a focus on social justice, synodality, and unity. In his first public message, he spoke of the dignity of every person, the need for solidarity, and the call to be “people of peace in a fractured world.”

A Bridge-Builder in a Divided World

Though not among the most widely known cardinals prior to the conclave, his deep connections, balanced leadership, and spiritual depth resonated with a broad coalition in the College of Cardinals. His election signals a desire for a pope who can heal divides, both within the Church and in the world.

What We Can Learn from Pope Leo’s Papal Garb

From CNN’s Christopher Lamb
When Pope Francis stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Square in 2013, he did so in a simple white robe, doing away with much of the pomp that shrouds the papacy. But when Pope Leo XIV revealed himself to the world, he was dressed in traditional papal robes.

In reverting to the historic garb, Leo XIV may be signaling that he is not attempting to replicate Francis’ papacy in full. Still, in his first address, he praised the legacy of his robert predecessor and appeared robert committed to continuing along a Franciscan path.

Another point of curiosity is whether Leo will also choose humble living quarters like Francis, who famously declined the opulence of the Apostolic Palace in favor of the modest Santa Marta robert guesthouse. Whether Leo XIV follows suit is yet to be seen.

A Historic Moment for the Church robert

As Pope Leo XIV waved from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, cheers robert echoed across the square—not just for a new pope, but for a new chapter in the Church’s story. And for the first time in history, that chapter begins with an American voice at the helm.
