Chase Bank to Close Branches for Presidents’ Day Observance

Chase Bank has announced that all 4,700 of its branches across the U.S. will be closed for 24 hours on Monday in recognition of Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday that is often overlooked. While in-person banking services will be unavailable, customers can still access their accounts through online banking and ATMs.

Chase is not alone in this observance—other major financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, will also close their doors for the holiday. The stock market, government offices, and public schools will also pause operations for the day, though most businesses and retail stores will remain open.

What Customers Need to Know

Although physical branches will be closed, Chase customers can still perform essential transactions using the mobile app and website. This includes bill payments, fund transfers, and balance inquiries. ATMs will remain available for cash withdrawals and deposits, but any transactions requiring in-person assistance—such as large cash withdrawals, loan services, or account troubleshooting—will need to be handled before the weekend or after reopening on Tuesday.

It’s also important to note that some transactions, including check deposits and wire transfers, may be delayed due to the Federal Reserve’s holiday closure. Any actions initiated on Monday may not be processed until the next business day.

Understanding Presidents’ Day

Presidents’ Day is observed on the third Monday of February each year. Originally designated as a national holiday in 1885 to celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the observance was later moved from February 22 to a Monday in 1971 under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Over time, the holiday evolved into a broader celebration of all U.S. presidents, particularly Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday falls on February 12.

This year, Presidents’ Day falls on February 17, making it a long weekend for many government employees and financial institutions.

How This Affects Banking Services

For Chase customers, planning ahead is crucial. Since branches will not be open, those who need to complete tasks that require a assistance should do so by the end of the business day on Friday. Otherwise, they will need to wait until operations resume on Tuesday.

Digital banking remains fully functional, ensuring that routine financial transactions can still be completed. ATMs will continue to operate for withdrawals and deposits, but those expecting fund transfers or check clearances should be aware that processing times may be longer than usual.

What Else is Closed?

Federal offices, courthouses, and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed for the holiday. The stock market will also be on pause, with trading resuming on Tuesday. However, most private businesses, restaurants, and grocery stores will remain open unless individual locations decide to give employees the day off.

Looking Ahead

While Presidents’ Day may not receive as much attention as other national holidays, it remains a significant part of U.S. history, honoring the country’s leadership over the years.  It is an opportunity to acknowledge this tradition while encouraging customers to take advantage of digital services.

For those with urgent banking needs, the best approach is to plan ahead, use online services when possible, and be prepared for any processing delays due to the holiday. Branches will resume regular operations on Tuesday, ensuring business continues as usual.
