India and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire, Breached Within Hours by Drone Attacks

On May 10, 2025, India and Pakistan declared a full and immediate ceasefire following days of rising military conflict. The agreement, hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough, came after intense overnight negotiations mediated personally by former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the truce was short-lived — within hours, Pakistan reportedly launched drone attacks and artillery shelling across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, severely undermining hopes for lasting peace.

Trump’s Role in the Ceasefire Talks

Donald Trump, who returned to international diplomacy as a peace envoy, played a central role in brokering the ceasefire. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.”

Trump had been in communication with both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the past week, encouraging a de-escalation of hostilities. His efforts were supported by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

The talks reportedly focused on averting further cross-border strikes and creating a framework for ongoing dialogue. Trump’s diplomatic push was seen as an effort to re-establish U.S. influence in South Asian conflict resolution.

Background: Escalation of Tensions

Tensions spiked after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. India blamed the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba and launched retaliatory strikes on militant infrastructure. Pakistan responded with counterstrikes, marking one of the fiercest military exchanges in over 20 years.

Immediate Ceasefire Violation

Just hours after the ceasefire went into effect at 5:00 PM IST, reports emerged of Pakistani drones violating Indian airspace. Explosions and anti-aircraft fire were witnessed in Srinagar, Baramulla, Rajouri, Samba, and parts of Punjab, including Pathankot and Gurdaspur. In Baramulla, one drone was reportedly shot down.

Indian security forces were placed on high alert, and blackout orders were issued in several towns. Sources within the BSF confirmed they had been instructed to respond “with full force” to any further provocations.

Global Reactions

The U.S. State Department reiterated Trump’s call for calm, with Secretary Rubio stating:

“This ceasefire was hard-earned. We urge both sides to honor it and return to the negotiating table.”

While Trump’s involvement received praise for preventing a wider war, the breach highlighted the volatility of the region and the fragility of any peace process.
