Sunrise Energy Metals Backs Syerston Scandium Project, Spotlighting Scandium Stocks ASX

Sunrise Energy Metals commits to building the world’s first dedicated scandium mine in NSW, a landmark for Australia scandium mining

Sunrise Energy Metals (ASX: SRL) will spend US$322 million (A$456 million) building the world’s first dedicated scandium mine in NSW. The Syerston Scandium Project sits near Fifield in the central west of the state. The decision was reported on 4 Nov 2026.

That decision lifts total investment in Australian critical minerals projects above A$3 billion this year. It also puts scandium stocks ASX in sharper focus for investors.

Why Australia Scandium Mining Is in Focus

Sunrise Energy Metals is advancing as scandium supply remains tied to one country. China supplies almost 100 per cent of the world’s scandium, according to the Australian Financial Review. The metal is used in semiconductors, fuel cells and defence applications.

China’s Export Ban Changes the Market

Sunrise Energy Metals CEO Sam Riggall says the 2025 export ban “completely changed the psychology of both governments and markets”. Scandium was previously a byproduct of mines focused mainly on other metals.

The ban also prompted nations such as the US to fund supply chains outside China. Riggall expects governments in particular to resist a return to the old pattern, even if China eases restrictions.

Syerston Scandium Project Funding and Build Plan

Sunrise Energy Metals has secured a US$400 million loan from the US Department of War. The loan backs the final investment decision on the Syerston Scandium Project.

Water Pipelines Take a Large Share of Cost

Sunrise Energy Metals expects close to 25 per cent of the Project cost to fund water pipelines. The pipelines will run about 80 kilometres from Forbes to the mine site.

A Long Revival Led by Sam Riggall

Sunrise Energy Metals ran Syerston as a nickel and cobalt project for most of the past 13 years. Riggall has led it since 2013. The Company shifted to scandium around the nickel and cobalt deposit after China’s export ban.

Australia Scandium Mining Joins a Wave of Investment Above A$3 Billion

Sunrise Energy Metals joins three other developers with positive final investment decisions this year. Together, the four projects represent more than A$3 billion of investment.

Industry Outlook

Sunrise Energy Metals works in a critical minerals sector that has drawn billions from governments over four years. Those include Washington, Canberra, Tokyo and Brussels. Australia scandium mining sits inside that wider push.

Riggall wants these industries to become “boring utility industries” instead of boom and bust cycles.
