The AFL community is mourning the sudden death of former Richmond and Collingwood player Andrew Krakouer. He passed away at the age of 42 in Perth. The cause of death was a suspected heart attack at his family home.
Krakouer’s AFL Career and Achievements
Andrew Krakouer, known for his skills as a crafty forward, played 137 AFL games between 2001 and 2013. He represented Richmond for 102 matches and Collingwood for 35.
Krakouer made his AFL debut in 2001 with Richmond. He was selected with pick 41 in the 2000 national draft. During his time with the Tigers, he kicked 102 goals over seven seasons.
Krakouer joined Collingwood in 2011. He made an immediate impact, scoring 35 goals and playing in the AFL Grand Final. He was notable for his performance, kicking three goals in the Magpies’ loss to Geelong.
In 2011, Krakouer won Mark of the Year for a remarkable grab against Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. His skills and football intelligence made him a valuable player.

Krakouer’s Journey Through Challenges
Andrew Krakouer faced challenges in his personal life. In June 2008, he was found guilty of assault with intent to cause bodily harm. He was sentenced to four years in prison. Krakouer served time at Wooroloo Prison and played for the prison football team. He was released on parole in August 2009.
Upon release, Krakouer returned to play for Swan Districts in the WAFL. He made an extraordinary comeback, winning the Sandover Medal and Simpson Medal in 2010. Krakouer played a crucial role in Swan Districts’ one-point Grand Final victory over Claremont.
Swan Districts coach Brian Dawson praised Krakouer’s determination. Dawson said, “He owned his sentence with good grace, and worked very hard to rehabilitate himself.” He commended Krakouer for his positive impact on the team.
Return to AFL and Media Career
Collingwood picked up Krakouer in 2011. He proved his worth, contributing significantly to the team’s success. Collingwood captain and coach Nathan Buckley described him as a “brilliant footballer” and a “genius” on the field.
After his AFL career ended in 2013 due to leg injuries, Krakouer returned to Western Australia. He played for West Perth before transitioning into media roles. He became a co-host on Yokayi Footy and appeared as a commentator on Fox Footy.

Former teammate Matthew Richardson described Krakouer as a “beautiful man” and a talented player. Richardson said, “He had a great sense of humour and was one of those people you felt really good to be around.”

Andrew Krakouer continued to make a positive impact after his playing days. He worked in the media and was involved in mentoring programs. He focused on helping others through his own experiences.
Dawson acknowledged Krakouer’s contributions to mentoring and rehabilitation efforts. He said Krakouer had turned his life around and served as a model citizen.
