United Airlines will launch a new non-stop route between Adelaide and San Francisco. The service will start in December, just in time for Christmas and the school holidays. The airline will be the first to offer a direct route from Adelaide to the United States.
Inaugural Flight Details
The inaugural flight from San Francisco to Adelaide will depart on 11 December. The 15-hour journey will operate three times weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Flights will depart San Francisco at 2:55 pm and arrive in Adelaide at 9:30 am the following day.
This new route will make United Airlines the only carrier with direct flights to four Australian cities — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Premier Highlights Economic Growth
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted the significance of the new route.
“For many years, the ambition of a direct route between South Australia and the US has been out of reach,” Mr Malinauskas said in a statement.
“With our State’s economy outperforming the nation, and the historic AUKUS agreement set to drive unprecedented investment into South Australia – now is the right time for direct flights to the US.”
Tourism Boost for South Australia
The United States remains a crucial market for South Australia’s tourism sector. Last year, more than 44,000 American visitors entered the state, contributing $77 million to the local economy.
South Australia’s Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison, praised the partnership between United Airlines and the state.
“This is a historic collaboration between United Airlines and our state,” Ms Bettison said.
“I would like to extend a warm South Australian welcome to all Americans who are looking for the perfect Australian holiday.”
Strategic Route Expansion
The new Adelaide-San Francisco route aims to strengthen economic ties between South Australia and the United States. The direct flights align with South Australia’s growing tourism market and economic ambitions.
South Australia continues to attract international airlines. Emirates recently launched daily routes between Adelaide and Dubai. That move is expected to accommodate 220,400 passengers annually.

Convenient Access to Tourist Destinations
The route provides convenient access to South Australia’s famous wine regions. The Barossa Valley sits one hour north of Adelaide, similar to the Napa Valley’s proximity to San Francisco.
Ms Bettison highlighted South Australia’s unique natural attractions.
“South Australia is a great place to experience unique settings and wildlife – to get up close with kangaroos and koalas or swim with dolphins and sea lions,” she said.
Economic Impact
The direct route to San Francisco is expected to boost tourism, business, and trade between South Australia and the United States. The state anticipates a multimillion-dollar economic impact from the initiative.
With the AUKUS agreement driving investment into South Australia, the direct route marks a strategic development. United Airlines aims to capitalise on the demand for seamless travel between the two regions.
