The Vivienne: A Life of Glamour, Talent, and Courage

The entertainment world and drag community are mourning the untimely loss of James Lee Williams, the celebrated drag artist known as The Vivienne. At just 32 years old, their passing was announced by public relations representative Simon Jones on Sunday.

“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend,” Jones shared on Instagram. “James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. We will not release further details and ask for privacy as the family grieves.”

Williams hailed as a trailblazer in British drag, leaves a remarkable legacy that spans television, film, and theatre. Their fierce creativity, sharp wit, and ability to captivate audiences on multiple platforms defined their career.

Rise to Stardom

Born in North Wales, Williams took their first steps into the spotlight in 2015, becoming the UK drag ambassador for RuPaul’s Drag Race. However, their defining moment came in 2019, when they were crowned the first RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner. Their performance of Wham!’s I’m Your Man in the final showcased their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, earning them a devoted fanbase.

The Vivienne didn’t stop there. In 2020, they starred in the BBC Three series The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood, chronicling their journey into music video production with celebrity guests. Their career flourished, leading to appearances in the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and a strong showing as a finalist on Dancing on Ice in 2023.

Versatility on Stage and Screen

Known for their theatrical flair, Williams brought their drag artistry to live performances, earning praise for roles such as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz and the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Their ability to balance humour and drama is also translated into film, with roles in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie and appearances in popular television shows like Emmerdale.

Their love of performing was rooted in their unique drag persona, inspired by Vivienne Westwood. “My style is like a Scouse wife who has come into money moved to LA, blew it all, and then had to move back to Liverpool,” they joked in 2019. They were known for blending old-school and contemporary drag, excelling in comedy and vocal impersonations.
