Richard Hammond Announces Split from Wife After 28 Years of Marriage

Richard Hammond, the well-known TV presenter famed for his roles on Top Gear and The Grand Tour, has announced his separation from his wife Amanda “Mindy” Hammond after nearly three decades together. The couple, who tied the knot in 2002, shared a joint statement online confirming their decision to part ways.

The statement read: “This Christmas, we spent time together as a family, and while we will remain a family, things will look a little different moving forward. Our marriage is ending, but we’ve shared 28 amazing years and raised two incredible daughters. We will always be a part of each other’s lives and are proud of the family we built together.”

The couple concluded by requesting privacy for themselves and their children during this transitional period.

A Love That Endured Through Challenges

Hammond, 55, has often spoken fondly of Mindy’s unwavering support, especially during some of the most challenging times in his life. One of those defining moments was his near-fatal crash in 2006 while filming Top Gear. Driving a jet-powered car at an astonishing speed of 288 mph, Hammond lost control, leading to a catastrophic accident that left him in a coma and with severe head injuries.

In a 2022 interview, Hammond shared a vivid memory from that harrowing time. He described being in a dreamlike state while unconscious, wandering through the serene hills of the Lake District.

“I had a vivid dream where I was walking these beautiful hills near Buttermere,” he recounted. “As I strolled, I felt a growing sense of unease. Eventually, I turned back from a tree in my dream, and that’s when I woke up.”

Unbeknownst to Hammond, his wife had been at his bedside, desperately urging him to fight for his life. “She was shouting and screaming at me, saying, ‘Don’t you dare die!’” he recalled. Mindy’s emotional plea, he believes, was instrumental in pulling him back from the brink.

A Family Legacy

Over their marriage, Richard and Mindy raised two daughters, Izzy, 24, and Willow, 22. Their family bond extended into their professional lives as well; Hammond and his daughter Izzy co-host the podcast Who We Are Now. Izzy also collaborates with her father at his restoration garage, a project close to his heart.

Hammond’s career spans decades, from humble beginnings on local radio to becoming a household name through Top Gear. Alongside James May and Jeremy Clarkson, Hammond became a staple in the automotive world. The trio later transitioned to The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime, further solidifying their global fame.

In addition to his motoring projects, Hammond has also ventured into entertainment, hosting popular shows like Brainiac and Total Wipeout.

Moving Forward

While the announcement marks the end of an era for Richard and Mindy, the pair remain committed to maintaining a strong family dynamic. The decision to part ways, they emphasized, was made with mutual respect and love for the life they built together.

As fans of the TV presenter reflect on his long-standing career and personal journey, the news serves as a reminder of the resilience and grace with which he has faced life’s challenges.

For now, Richard Hammond remains focused on his projects and family, continuing to share his passion for motoring and storytelling with audiences worldwide.
