Naughty Dog, the renowned game developer behind “Uncharted” and “The Last of Us,” has unveiled their latest IP, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” at the 2024 Game Awards. The game marks a shift to a retro sci-fi setting, reminiscent of “Cowboy Bebop,” and stars Tati Gabrielle as Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet cut off from communication with the outside universe for over 600 years. Watch the trailer below:

A Desperate Journey on Sempiria

Set thousands of years in the future, “Intergalactic” follows Jordan A. Mun, who must use all her skills and wits to become the first person in centuries to leave Sempiria’s orbit. The planet’s mysterious past has remained hidden, with no one who’s attempted to unravel it ever returning. Jordan faces a daunting challenge as she navigates this dangerous, uncharted world.

A New Direction for Naughty Dog

Directed by Neil Druckmann, “Intergalactic” represents a departure from Naughty Dog’s previous cover-based shooters like “Uncharted” and “The Last of Us.” The game features a more dynamic combat style, including melee battles against mechs and potentially new weapons. Kumail Nanjiani co-stars, adding to the intrigue with a brief appearance in the trailer. The score, composed by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, promises an emotionally charged soundtrack to complement the game’s character-driven narrative.

Development and Release Plans

In development since 2020, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” is expected to push the boundaries of gameplay within the studio’s history. However, the release date remains uncertain, with no specific year announced yet. Given the scope and ambition, it could be a few years before we see it on the shelves, possibly not until 2026 or later.

Naughty Dog has not relied on familiar franchises for this new game, aiming to capture the magic of earlier hits like “Uncharted” and “The Last of Us.” The aim is to create a new iconic series that could redefine the sci-fi genre in gaming.

What to Expect

While the initial trailer only gives glimpses of the gameplay, it hints at a significant shift in style and mechanics. “Intergalactic” appears to focus more on gameplay than cinematics, emphasizing action sequences and player agency. This shift aligns with Naughty Dog’s goal to innovate and bring fresh experiences to players.

“Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” promises to be an emotional, character-driven epic journey set against the backdrop of a mysterious, isolated planet. With its ambitious scope and unique sci-fi setting, it could mark a new chapter for the studio, aiming to redefine the genre’s boundaries.
