Fortescue Recognised as Global Leader in Decarbonisation

Fortescue has been named among the world’s leading companies in decarbonisation efforts, according to a new UTS report. The report was jointly published by Climate Integrity and the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney.

It praises Fortescue, IKEA and Lendlease for setting a benchmark in climate action through their real zero emissions goals. These companies are not relying on carbon offsets or carbon capture to reduce their environmental footprint.

Real Zero Emissions Sets a New Corporate Standard

The report highlights the company’s commitment to achieving real zero emissions, not just net-zero pledges. Real zero involves eliminating fossil fuel emissions entirely, rather than compensating with offsets.

The CEO Dino Otranto said the recognition affirms the company’s drive to eliminate fossil fuels without delay.  He emphasised that heavy industry can take immediate steps rather than delay decarbonisation in the future.

Fortescue is leading efforts to prove emissions reduction is possible now, not sometime later. This real zero approach stands in contrast to slower, offset-heavy strategies still used by many global firms.

Fortescue’s 2030 Scope 1 and 2 Goal

The company aims to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to zero by 2030 at its Pilbara iron ore operations. These emissions make up 88 per cent of the company’s total operational footprint.

In addition, Fortescue has committed to cutting Scope 3 emissions, which include downstream impacts. These include a 50% cut in shipping emissions and a 7.5% reduction in steelmaking emissions.

The company targets net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2040, ahead of many global peers. Fortescue has already begun implementing clean technologies across its operational and logistical chains.

Massive Investment in Renewable Energy Infrastructure

The company is investing $US6.2B ($9.5B) in large-scale clean energy infrastructure across the Pilbara region. This includes plans for 2–3 gigawatts of renewable energy and energy storage capacity.

A 190-megawatt solar farm at the Cloudbreak mine is currently under construction and nearing key milestones. These developments aim to power mine operations while significantly cutting operational emissions.

This proactive approach reduces long-term energy costs and stabilises supply for remote operations. The initiative reflects Fortescue’s belief in seizing efficiency and sustainability together.

Climate Integrity Report Commends Fortescue’s Ambition

The UTS-backed report names Fortescue’s decarbonisation path a benchmark for climate-focused corporations. Climate Integrity director Claire Snyder said it shows real zero targets are both viable and profitable.

She noted that leaders like Fortescue are redefining what meaningful climate leadership looks like globally. Unlike conventional net-zero approaches, Fortescue’s strategy delivers a clear and immediate path to genuine climate action.

The report includes case studies demonstrating that abandoning offsets leads to measurable results. It urges more companies to adopt Fortescue’s model for environmental, social and financial gain.

Fortescue’s Broader Commitment to Sustainability

Fortescue’s environmental strategy extends beyond emissions and into broader sustainability leadership. It includes engaging Indigenous communities, ensuring workforce participation and reducing environmental impact.

The company also supports technology partnerships to drive future climate innovation and cleaner production. Decarbonisation is part of company’s larger mission to remain globally competitive and environmentally responsible.

This alignment of financial success with sustainability principles sets a strong example in mining and industry. Stakeholders increasingly demand companies address climate risks with urgent and concrete action.

Setting a New Benchmark for Global Industry

The Climate Integrity report underscores how the company and peers are setting global industry benchmarks. These examples demonstrate that large-scale climate action is possible even in carbon-intensive industries.

The company’s strategy highlights that smart investment in real zero emissions leads to long-term resilience. It sends a message that true climate leadership involves bold commitments and operational transformation.

By targeting operational emissions head-on, the company is building a more robust and future-ready business model. Recognition from UTS and Climate Integrity confirms the company as a global leader in climate action.
