In the UEFA Europa League Matches, Sparta Praha, Toulouse, and Qarabağ will all advance, while the Rangers battled against the odds to defeat Real Betis. Clubs competed fiercely to avoid a difficult play-off tie and qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League Matches.

The teams driven out from the Champions League will face the runners-up from each of the eight groups.   Despite losing to Union Saint-Gilloise with a youthful team in Belgium, Liverpool and Rangers will join West Ham and Brighton in the round of 16. The Hammers joined the Reds as group champions after easily defeating Freiburg at the London Stadium. Hammers will not face teams eliminated from the UEFA Champions League earlier this week in a play-off.

On Thursday, Rangers defeated Real Betis 3-2 due to a goal from Kemar Roofe. Brighton also beat Marseille with a last-minute strike from Joao Pedro. After their first home loss of the season, the Rangers held on for a thrilling victory that forced Betis to settle for a Conference League play-off position. Brighton defeated Marseille 1-0 at home in Group B to avoid a Europa League match knockout phase play-off in February.

In the meantime, Villarreal defeated Rennes 3-2 in a thrilling match to take first place in Group F and advance straight to round 16. Dani Parejo scored the game’s final victory late on, and even though Rennes appeared to have equalised late on, VAR disallowed the goal.

How many teams qualify for the Europa League Matches?

The last two teams to secure their spots for the Europa League Matches on the closing day were FC Porto and Paris Saint-Germain. 32 European teams have made it to round 16 of the Champions League. With all four of their players making it to round 16, Spain has the most teams. On Monday, December 18, the UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw will occur at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland. On February 13/14 and February 20/21, the two-leg Champions League round of 16 ties will get started. March 5/6 and March 12/13 will see the second legs of each tie played.

The top eight finishers in each group go straight to the round of 16. Teams that come second in their groups get a playoff match against the teams that move down to the Europa League as third-place finishers in their Champions League groups.
