Eric Lassen Appointed CEO of Live Performance Australia

Eric Lassen has been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Live Performance Australia (LPA). The announcement came on Thursday, 5 December, marking the end of Evelyn Richardson’s 18-year tenure in the role. Lassen, a veteran business leader with extensive experience in the entertainment and finance sectors, will take charge in early January 2025.

Extensive Leadership Experience

Lassen’s background includes significant leadership roles, notably as CEO of PayPal Australia and Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Live Nation Entertainment. He has also served on multiple not-for-profit boards, including as President of the Music Forward Foundation.

“Eric’s demonstrated leadership experience and ability to successfully navigate complex business, policy, and regulatory issues will ensure that LPA stays at the forefront in representing our Members’ best interests and supporting their growth and success,” said LPA President Richard Evans.

Vision for a Sustainable Industry

Lassen expressed excitement about his new role and outlined his vision for the organisation.

Australia is home to some of the world’s best creative talent and arts and business leaders,” he said. “I’m keen to work alongside them in building and advocating for a sustainable, successful and growing industry which will excite, engage and entertain current and future generations of Australian and international audiences.”

Evelyn Richardson’s Legacy

Richardson announced her decision to step down in June 2024 after nearly two decades of service. Under her leadership, LPA has grown significantly and played a vital role in the live arts and entertainment sector.

“The industry has grown strongly and evolved significantly over the past couple of decades, notwithstanding the disruption inflicted by the pandemic and other challenges along the way,” Richardson said.

She praised the resilience of the sector and expressed confidence in its bright future.

Challenges Facing the Industry

Lassen takes the reins during a challenging time for the live arts and entertainment industry. Festivals are struggling, small music venues face financial pressures, and shifting ticket-buying behaviours are impacting concert organisers.

Evans acknowledged the challenges but emphasised the industry’s resilience.

“While audiences have returned in strong numbers since COVID, our Members are rebuilding and adapting to the post-pandemic environment,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of strong leadership to navigate the current economic and regulatory landscape.

LPA’s Role in the Industry

LPA is the peak body for Australia’s live arts and entertainment sector, representing over 400 members. The organisation advocates for its members, publishes the annual Ticket Attendance and Revenue Report, and organises events like the Helpmann Awards.

Lassen’s appointment signals a continued commitment to supporting the industry through advocacy and innovation.

A Look Ahead

With Lassen at the helm, LPA aims to address pressing issues and foster growth in the live performance sector. His experience and leadership are expected to drive the organisation forward in a competitive and evolving environment.

As Lassen prepares to begin his new role, he is set to build on Richardson’s legacy while steering the industry towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
