UK Demands Israel Grant Immediate Humanitarian Access to Gaza

At a high-stakes United Nations Security Council meeting on the Middle East crisis, the United Kingdom has issued a direct and urgent appeal to Israel: allow humanitarian aid into Gaza without delay and enable the United Nations to operate fully to avert an escalating humanitarian catastrophe.

UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador James Kariuki, delivered a forceful statement, reflecting growing international frustration over the worsening conditions in Gaza and what he described as disproportionate Israeli military actions. His address followed briefings by UN Special Coordinator Sigrid Kaag and Dr Sidwah, which, according to Kariuki, “painted a catastrophic picture” of the humanitarian toll.

UK Reaffirms Israel’s Right to Security but Condemns Disproportionate Action

While reaffirming the UK’s position on Israel’s right to self-defence following Hamas’ October 7 attacks, Kariuki also emphasised the need for balance. “Hostages must be released unconditionally,” he said. “But, as my Prime Minister has stated, we strongly oppose the Israeli Government’s escalating military action in Gaza which is wholly disproportionate.”

He underscored that continuing military operations will not secure the release of hostages nor bring sustainable peace. “An immediate ceasefire, not more bloodshed, is the way to end this cycle of violence,” he added.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza

Kariuki painted a grim picture of civilian suffering in Gaza, describing conditions of starvation, mass displacement, and trauma. The UK envoy warned that the situation had deteriorated beyond acceptable limits, particularly in Rafah, where recent violence resulted in the collapse of aid coordination.

“In Rafah yesterday, we saw this warning become a reality. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation lost control of its distribution centre, with multiple casualties and deep distress for those seeking aid,” he noted.

With over 9,000 trucks of supplies stalled at the border and humanitarian agencies ready to act, Kariuki demanded that Israel remove obstacles to UN-led aid operations. “The UN has a clear plan to deliver lifesaving aid at scale. Brave humanitarians stand ready to do their jobs. Our message to Prime Minister Netanyahu is clear: let aid in and enable the UN to operate, now.”

UK Rejects Israeli Plans for Long-Term Control Over Gaza

In addition to humanitarian concerns, Kariuki criticised Israeli intentions to assert control over the Gaza Strip, calling it a violation of international law. “We reject the Israeli Government’s unacceptable intention to take control of the Gaza Strip. Permanent forced displacement is a breach of international humanitarian law,” he said.

This statement follows increasing reports of population displacement in Gaza and suggestions from some Israeli officials about potential post-war administrative arrangements in the enclave.

Rising Violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem

Turning to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Kariuki condemned what he described as “violent settler activity” and “provocative behaviour” by Israeli ministers. He highlighted the forced displacement of Palestinian communities and the tension surrounding religious sites in Jerusalem.

“In the West Bank, violent settlers continue to assault and abuse Palestinians, forcing entire communities to flee. In Jerusalem, provocative visits to Holy Sites and inflammatory language are adding to tensions,” he said.

In response, the UK announced new sanctions on May 20 targeting individuals and entities associated with these acts of violence. “We will continue to act against those committing these abuses,” Kariuki stated.

Commitment to Two-State Solution and Upcoming Peace Conference

Despite rising tensions, the UK reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to a two-state solution. Kariuki expressed hope for progress at a forthcoming international conference in June, being organised in coordination with France and Saudi Arabia.

“The UK will not give up on a two-state solution. We continue to work closely with France, Saudi Arabia, and all our partners towards a successful conference that moves us closer to this goal,” he said.

Condolences for Tragic Murders in Washington

In closing, Ambassador Kariuki took a moment to offer condolences for the victims of a recent tragedy in the United States. “Let me finish by condemning the horrific murders of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim in Washington DC last week. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and colleagues.”

Looking Ahead

With international pressure mounting and humanitarian needs growing by the hour, the UK’s statement signals a sharpening tone toward Israeli actions and a renewed push for peace and accountability in the region. Whether these appeals will shift the course of the conflict remains to be seen, but the urgency in Ambassador Kariuki’s words was unmistakable: “Let aid in. Let the UN work. And let us move, finally, toward peace.”
