Petrol-Electric Power Returns to LandCruiser
Toyota will introduce the 2026 Toyota LandCruiser Hybrid in Australia during the first half of 2026, marking the long-awaited return of petrol power to the LandCruiser lineup after more than five years. The 2026 Toyota LandCruiser Hybrid, part of the 300 Series, will feature a performance-focused hybrid powertrain that prioritizes power and off-road capability over fuel economy.

Hybrid System Delivers More Power Than Diesel
The new model pairs a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with a parallel hybrid system. Despite Toyota referring to it as a 3.5-litre unit, the actual displacement is 3.4 litres. The combined outputs reach 341kW and 790Nm, outpacing the 3.3-litre turbo-diesel V6, which delivers 227kW and 700Nm.
The hybrid system uses a single electric motor similar to those in the Lexus LX700h and Toyota Tundra. The electric motor contributes 36kW and operates in short bursts at low speeds or to assist the engine load. This configuration does not aim for electric-only driving but supports performance and durability across varied conditions.
Performance Prioritised Over Fuel Economy
Toyota does not promote this system for major fuel savings. In the US Lexus LX, the hybrid saves just 0.6L/100km compared to the petrol engine. The hybrid consumes over 3.0L/100km more than the diesel in Australia, according to comparative market figures. Fuel economy estimates for the Australian-spec LandCruiser 300 Hybrid remain unconfirmed.
Testing Across Extreme Conditions
Toyota stated the hybrid system underwent testing in extreme environments. These include the deserts and mountains of the Middle East. The brand claims to have developed the powertrain with “true off-road capability and reliability front of mind”.
“We have always said that Toyota aims to offer the right powertrains to suit our customers, and we are excited to introduce the first performance hybrid LandCruiser next year, which will offer a level of capability never before seen on our flagship four-wheel drive,” said Sean Hanley, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Toyota Australia.
Market Positioning and Features
The 2026 LandCruiser 300 Hybrid is expected to command a premium above the current diesel models. Diesel variants range from approximately $100,000 to $150,000 before on-road costs. Overseas models include a 1500-watt household power socket in the cargo space. However, Australian models will not receive the sportier bumper design featured on Middle Eastern versions. It is also unclear if the ‘HEV’ badges will be applied to local models.
Powertrain Shared with Lexus and Tundra
The hybrid LandCruiser will share the V35A-FTS hybrid powertrain with the Lexus LX700h and Toyota Tundra. A 10-speed automatic transmission will accompany the drivetrain. This setup confirms its alignment with other high-end Toyota offerings and reinforces Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to vehicle electrification.

Hybrid Push Expands Toyota’s Local Range
With the addition of the LandCruiser 300 Series Hybrid, Toyota will offer ten hybrid models in Australia. This figure excludes the mild-hybrid HiLux and LandCruiser Prado. Toyota continues to lead local hybrid vehicle deliveries, accounting for more than 50 percent of total hybrid sales in the country.
Outpacing Nissan in Hybrid SUV Market
Toyota’s hybrid release positions the LandCruiser ahead of rival Nissan Patrol, which currently lacks an electrified powertrain. The Nissan Patrol set an Australian sales record in 2024 with its V8 petrol engine, despite the ageing Y62 platform. Nissan’s upcoming Y63 Patrol, due late 2026 or early 2027, will feature a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, but not a hybrid.
More Details Coming Before Launch
Toyota Australia has confirmed the hybrid LandCruiser will arrive in showrooms in the first half of 2026. Additional information, including fuel economy, full pricing, and equipment levels, will be announced before launch.
The 2026 Toyota LandCruiser Hybrid continues the legacy of the LandCruiser while introducing new technology. Toyota remains committed to delivering powertrains that meet customer needs and environmental expectations, reinforcing its market leadership in hybrid innovation.
