British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been formally charged with multiple serious sexual offences, including rape, oral rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, stemming from allegations dating between 1999 and 2005.
The charges, which have been authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), involve four separate women and relate to alleged incidents across various locations in England, primarily London and Bournemouth.
Details of the Allegations
According to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police, the following charges have been filed:
- In 1999, a woman alleges that she was raped by Brand in the Bournemouth area.
- In 2001, another woman claims to have been indecently assaulted in Westminster, London.
- In 2004, a third woman alleges she was both orally raped and sexually assaulted, again in Westminster.
- Between 2004 and 2005, a fourth woman claims to have been sexually assaulted by Brand, also in Westminster.
These accusations come after an extensive police investigation that began following a September russell 2023 exposé by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. The joint investigation aired testimonies from several women who alleged misconduct, sparking a broader review of Brand’s conduct over the years.

Brand Responds on Social Media
In a video posted to his X (formerly Twitter) account this week, Brand denied the russell charges, stating: “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.” He added that he welcomed the opportunity to defend himself in court and expressed confidence in the judicial process.
Brand is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 2 May. However, he is currently believed to be in the United States. Legal experts suggest that prosecutors will first attempt to secure his voluntary return, but if he fails to comply, extradition procedures may be initiated.
Prosecutors Emphasise Fair Trial
Jaswant Narwal of the CPS issued a statement confirming that the decision to charge Brand russell followed a “careful review of the evidence gathered during the police investigation.” Narwal reminded the public that Brand is entitled to a fair trial and warned against any reporting or online commentary that could prejudice legal proceedings.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation for the Metropolitan Police, reiterated the importance of support for the alleged victims and urged anyone with additional information to come forward. “The women who have made these reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers,” Furphy said.
Civil Lawsuit Also Filed
In addition to the criminal charges, a civil case was lodged against Brand earlier this year. Filed in russell February 2025 at the High Court in London, the case alleges personal injury and sexual abuse by Brand and was brought forward by an anonymous woman referred to as AGX in court documents.
This lawsuit is separate from the criminal case but underscores the growing legal challenges Brand now faces.
Career Russell Marked by Fame and Controversy
Born in Essex, Russell Brand’s career took off in the early 2000s with stand-up comedy and russell appearances at the Hackney Empire and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He became a household name as the host of “Big Brother’s Big Mouth” and later gained fame through high-profile gigs hosting MTV, the Brit Awards, and other major UK events.
However, Brand’s public image has often been mired in controversy. In 2008, he and fellow presenter Jonathan Ross were at the centre of a media firestorm after making inappropriate phone calls to actor Andrew Sachs during a BBC Radio 2 broadcast. The backlash led to Brand’s resignation from the BBC.
Despite the scandal, Brand successfully transitioned to Hollywood, starring in russell popular films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In recent years, he reinvented himself as a digital content creator, building a large following on YouTube where he shared views critical of mainstream media and promoted wellness and alternative ideologies. His recent content has often veered into conspiratorial narratives, particularly around COVID-19 and politics.
What Comes Next
With formal charges now in place, the criminal proceedings against Brand are set to begin in court next month. Legal experts say the case could be lengthy and closely watched, given the russell high-profile nature of the accused and the gravity of the allegations.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed their russell investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be brought if further evidence emerges. Meanwhile, Brand’s legal team has not publicly commented beyond his personal statement on social media.
