Oscar Piastri has achieved his second Formula 1 victory in what he called the “toughest race” of his career at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The 23-year-old Australian driver, racing for McLaren, secured his win after a nail-biting battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

A Perfect Drive Against Tough Competition
His win in Baku was nothing short of spectacular. Starting in second position, he overtook Leclerc on lap 20 with a daring move under DRS into turn one. Leclerc, a seasoned driver on the Baku circuit, had held pole position for the past four years, but Piastri’s late-braking manoeuvre left him unprepared.
He managed to pull off the overtake with more margin than even he expected. “Charles was very fair, leaving me plenty of space,” Piastri said post-race. “He probably thought I was going to overshoot, but I managed to pull it off.”
The race was far from over. Leclerc kept the pressure on for the remaining 31 laps, at times closing the gap to just tenths of a second. Throughout the final laps, Piastri demonstrated immense composure, defending his lead while also managing his tyres.
McLaren’s Rising Success
McLaren’s resurgence in the Formula 1 scene is remarkable. Just a year ago, the team was at the bottom of the constructors’ standings. Today, they lead the table for the first time since 2014, overtaking Red Bull in a shocking twist.
Piastri, reflecting on McLaren’s rise, credited the entire team for their effort. “We’ve made incredible progress over the last 18 months,” he said. “When I joined the team, we were literally last, and now we’re leading the championship.”
His team principal, Andrea Stella, also praised Piastri’s performance, calling his drive “brilliant” and highlighting the teamwork that went into securing the win. Lando Norris, Piastri’s teammate, played a crucial role by briefly holding off Sergio Perez in the pitstop cycle, helping Piastri maintain his lead.
The Battle with Leclerc
While Piastri may have pulled off the race-winning move, Leclerc fought back fiercely. For much of the remaining race, the Ferrari driver stayed within DRS range, attempting to close in on Piastri down the Baku City Circuit’s long straights.
Leclerc admitted after the race that he lost the victory by not defending the turn one move. “I should have done better,” he said. Despite the disappointment, he remained within a second of Piastri for most of the race, demonstrating the fierce competitiveness between the two drivers.
But in the end, it was Piastri who had the edge. As Leclerc’s tyres faded in the closing laps, he pulled away to secure a two-second lead before a late-race crash between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez led to a virtual safety car.
McLaren Takes the Constructors’ Lead
Piastri’s win, combined with Norris’ fourth-place finish after starting 15th, has catapulted McLaren to the top of the constructors’ standings. Red Bull, who had dominated the championship for the past two years, now trails McLaren by 20 points.
Despite the team’s recent success, Piastri remains humble and focused. “We’ve had a great run, but we need to keep working hard,” he said. “There’s still a lot of racing left this season.”
With seven races remaining, Piastri sits fourth in the drivers’ standings, 91 points behind Max Verstappen. However, his recent form has made him a strong contender for the future.
A Historic Win for Australia
Piastri’s victory in Azerbaijan is a significant achievement for Australian motorsport. He becomes the first Australian driver since Daniel Ricciardo in 2018 to win multiple races in a single season. Piastri’s mentor, Mark Webber, hailed his performance as “world-class.”
“Piastri has truly arrived as a top-tier driver,” Webber said. “To hold off someone like Leclerc, lap after lap, shows just how talented he is.”
This victory has also placed Piastri among an elite group of Australian drivers who have won Formula 1 races. He joins the ranks of Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber, and Daniel Ricciardo.
