In the early hours of January 1, 2025, a devastating attack shook New Orleans, leaving at least 15 dead and dozens injured. A pick-up truck rammed into New Year’s Eve revellers on Bourbon Street, a renowned tourist hotspot in the city’s French Quarter. Authorities later identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old military veteran from Texas. He was killed in a shootout with police shortly after the attack.
What Happened in New Orleans?
The attack occurred at approximately 3:15 am local time when a rented Ford F-150 pick-up truck drove at high speed through barricades into a dense crowd celebrating the new year. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the act as “intentional and calculated.” Witnesses recounted the horrifying scene of people being thrown into the air, with bodies scattered along the street. Zion Parsons, an 18-year-old from Mississippi, was among those killed. Princeton University’s football athlete Martin “Tiger” Bech also lost his life in the attack.
After the truck came to a halt, Jabbar exited the vehicle and fired at responding officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded him. Police discovered an explosive device at the site and are working to determine its viability. Despite the chaos, quick police intervention prevented further casualties.
Who Was Shamsud-Din Jabbar?
Shamsud-Din Jabbar served in the United States military from 2007 to 2020, including a deployment to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010. Following his military career, he pursued higher education and graduated from Georgia State University in 2017 with a degree in computer information systems. Since 2021, he has been employed by the consulting firm Deloitte in a staff-level position. According to the company, it is fully cooperating with investigators.
Despite his professional achievements, Jabbar’s personal life faced significant challenges. Court documents reveal financial difficulties stemming from his 2022 divorce. He struggled with $27,000 in overdue house payments and $16,000 in credit card debt, ultimately leading to foreclosure proceedings. Investigators are exploring whether these personal struggles contributed to his radicalisation.

A Possible Act of Terrorism
The FBI is treating the incident as an act of terrorism, citing preliminary evidence that Jabbar may have been inspired by ISIL (ISIS). An ISIL flag was found in the vehicle, and social media posts attributed to him suggest he expressed violent intentions. Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent with the FBI, stated that authorities are investigating whether Jabbar acted alone or had accomplices.
“We are aggressively following all leads, including examining his known associates,” Duncan said. Although details about the motive remain unclear, federal authorities are working to determine any potential affiliations with extremist groups.
Reactions from Officials and the Public
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed deep sorrow over the attack and emphasised the city’s commitment to ensuring public safety during the ongoing investigation. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy assured residents and visitors that law enforcement agencies are prepared for high-profile events like the Sugar Bowl college football game, which was postponed for 24 hours following the attack.
President Joe Biden condemned the violence, confirming that the FBI had briefed him on Jabbar’s apparent extremist motivations. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump labelled the attack “an act of pure evil,” extending condolences to the victims and their families.
The Aftermath and Investigation
The attack has left Bourbon Street cordoned off as investigators comb through the scene for evidence. Families of the victims have been directed to a rallying point at the University Medical Center to check on their loved ones. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies continue to analyse the explosive device found at the scene.
This tragic event marks one of the deadliest attacks in New Orleans’ history, casting a shadow over one of the country’s top tourist destinations. As the investigation unfolds, authorities and the community are grappling with the profound loss and seeking answers to what led a veteran to commit such a horrific act.
