A tragic incident occurred in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, leaving at least 15 people dead and 30 others injured. A driver intentionally crashed a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revellers in the city’s famous Bourbon Street area.
The Attack
At around 3:15 am local time, the driver, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, crashed his truck into the crowd. Eyewitnesses described the vehicle speeding through barricades and deliberately hitting pedestrians. Local police said Jabbar’s actions were calculated and aimed at causing as much destruction as possible. “This man, this perpetrator, he fired on our officers from his vehicle when he crashed his vehicle,” said New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
The driver was shot dead after exchanging fire with police officers. Two officers were injured in the gunfire, though they are now in stable condition.

Authorities Investigate the Motive
The FBI has launched an investigation into the attack. Authorities found an ISIS flag attached to the truck, and they also discovered improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside it. The FBI is treating this incident as an act of terrorism, with Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan stating, “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible.”
The FBI is investigating whether Jabbar had accomplices and has urged anyone with information about his activities in the 72 hours leading up to the attack to contact authorities.
Victims of the Attack
Details are emerging about some of the victims who lost their lives. Among the deceased were a mother of a four-year-old, a New York financial worker, an aspiring nurse, and a former athlete.
Zion Parsons, a Gulfport resident, was with his friend Nikyra Dedeaux when the truck struck her, flinging her 30 feet away. Parsons described the horrifying scene: “Bodies, bodies all up and down the street, everybody screaming and hollering. It was just insane, like the closest thing to a war zone that I’ve ever seen.”
Kimberley Usher, the owner of Kimmy’s Deli in Metarie, Louisiana, mourned the loss of Nicole Perez, a store manager and single mother. A crowdfunding campaign has been created to cover her burial expenses.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar: A Troubled Past
Jabbar, originally from Beaumont, Texas, had served in the U.S. Army as a human resources and IT specialist. His military background included a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009. Jabbar later worked in real estate and IT. However, he struggled with financial problems in recent years, including overdue house payments and a loss of income from his businesses.
Jabbar was facing financial difficulties, with court records showing he was behind on child support payments and dealing with a failing real estate business. He had also racked up significant credit card debt. Authorities suspect that these struggles may have contributed to his actions on New Year’s Day.
Jabbar rented the truck used in the attack from Turo, a vehicle rental app. The truck was a Ford F-150 Lightning electric vehicle, and Turo has since disabled the truck for renting.

Investigating Links to Terrorism
The FBI is investigating whether Jabbar was linked to the ISIS terrorist group. Authorities have discovered writings and videos that suggest Jabbar may have been inspired by ISIS. President Joe Biden expressed his condolences and stated that the federal government would assist in the investigation. “I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work assiduously to get to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible,” Biden said.
Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana condemned the attack, urging people to stay away from the area as authorities continued their investigation.
