A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, shaking the region with the force of 334 atomic bombs. The tremor devastated Mandalay and surrounding areas, leaving over 1,000 people dead. Experts warn that the death toll may climb further as rescue teams struggle to reach remote areas.

In neighbouring Thailand, Bangkok felt the full impact of the tremors, causing widespread panic. Buildings shook, transport lines stalled, and one high-rise under construction collapsed, burying over 100 workers. Rescuers are battling against time to pull survivors from the rubble.

Mandalay Residents Describe the Horror
Residents of Mandalay, the closest major city to the epicentre, shared harrowing accounts of the quake’s impact. One woman, cradling her baby, described how her grandmother was trapped under rubble as their home partially collapsed.
“It hit strong and fast. The walls cracked, and dust filled the air,” she recalled. With doors blocked by debris, she and her husband had to force their way out before carrying her injured grandmother to a clinic.
More than 2,300 people have suffered injuries, with hospitals struggling to cope amid Myanmar’s ongoing civil war. Experts fear that communication blackouts and poor infrastructure will further slow relief efforts.

Bangkok, located hundreds of kilometres away, faced unexpected devastation. The tremor sent skyscrapers swaying, water sloshing from rooftop pools, and train networks grinding to a halt.

The biggest disaster struck near Chatuchak market, where a 30-storey tower under construction crumbled. More than 100 workers were inside when the building collapsed. Families have gathered at the site, waiting for news.
“I kept calling, but all I heard was a busy signal,” said Junpen Kaewnoi, whose mother and sister were working at the site.
Emergency crews have detected signs of life from 15 individuals under the rubble, but hopes are fading. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that excavators and cranes are working non-stop to clear debris.
Thailand Scrambles to Inspect Buildings
Fearing further collapses, Bangkok authorities have received over 2,000 reports of structural cracks in buildings across the city. Engineers are inspecting at least 700 structures this weekend to ensure they remain safe.
“Safety is our top priority,” Governor Chadchart stated, reassuring the public that no completed buildings have suffered major failures.
However, the Thai earthquake has left lasting scars. The city’s iconic skyline remains shaken, and structural damage in high-rise buildings could take months to assess.
Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises, Relief Efforts Underway
As Myanmar’s earthquake death toll soars past 1,000, international aid agencies face a daunting challenge. The country’s ruling junta, despite past restrictions, has appealed for foreign aid.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing personally visited Mandalay, assessing the damage. However, with Myanmar’s civil war ongoing, relief efforts remain complicated.
Rescue teams report entire villages flattened, roads severed, and survivors struggling without food, water, or medical aid. The earthquake has deepened the country’s humanitarian crisis, with thousands of families left homeless.
A Quake Unlike Any Before
Seismologists warn that aftershocks could last for months, keeping both Myanmar and Thailand on edge. The powerful earthquake in Myanmar was one of the strongest recorded in the region, making it a historic disaster.
As Bangkok and Myanmar struggle to recover, the world watches, hoping for more survivors to emerge from the rubble.
