Hastings Deering has completed the rollout of 31 Caterpillar 793 Next Gen haul trucks at Stanmore Resources’ South Walker Creek mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The project was delivered ahead of the original April 2026 target, with all trucks on-site by March 2026.

The fleet represents the largest Cat 793 Next Gen deployment on the east coast of Australia. For Stanmore Resources, the South Walker Creek mine upgrade marks a decisive step in the Company’s broader growth strategy, combining payload performance, fuel efficiency, and safety improvements across a single fleet refresh.

A Fleet Decision That Grew Into a Strategic Partnership

Hastings Deering mining trucks were selected following a strategy review by Stanmore Resources, which operates South Walker Creek as a truck-and-shovel coal operation. The mine produces more than six million tonnes per annum of high-quality, low-volatile pulverised coal injection for steelmaking.

What began as a fleet replacement consideration evolved into the rollout of 31 Cat 793 Next Gen trucks across the central Queensland operation. The project extended an earlier milestone plan of 16 trucks by Christmas and 20 on-site by 1 Jan 2026, ultimately completing the full deployment by March 2026.

The Cat 793 Next Gen Truck and What It Brings to South Walker Creek

The Cat 793 Next Gen is built around a target payload capacity of 264 metric tons. This capacity provides an efficient pass match across Stanmore’s 400- and 600-tonne digger fleet at South Walker Creek mine, enabling flexible production planning across shifts.

Performance and Operator Comfort at the Core of the Design

The Cat 793 Next Gen achieves fuel efficiency through its low empty weight and high-efficiency mechanical drivetrain. A redesigned cab delivers 34 per cent more interior space, improving operator comfort and boosting productivity on long shifts.

The truck also features cutting-edge connectivity through an optimised electronics architecture. Dual-mode product link radio and faster data transfers support an operator-focused environment across the South Walker Creek mine site.

Safety Technology and Payload Uplift Drive Operational Gains

South Walker Creek General Manager Jason Greig described the Cat 793 Next Gen as a world-leading truck. He pointed to measurable improvements across multiple performance metrics.

“It’s a world-leading truck in terms of its technology. There’s an uplift in payload, performance, bank cubic metres per hour, and the ABS braking technology increases safety performance,” Greig said.

Greig also highlighted the immediate response from operators on-site when the Hastings Deering mining trucks arrived at the South Walker Creek mine.

“The feedback we got from the operators was almost instantaneously positive. It was, ‘Wow, we absolutely love them’. They’re comfortable, they’re productive, they’re quiet, and you see operators driving round in the cabin with a smile on their face,” Greig said.

Ahead of Schedule and Built on Open Communication

The original project timeline called for the full fleet of Hastings Deering mining trucks to be on-site by April 2026. The Hastings Deering team completed the rollout in March 2026, delivering the project ahead of the baseline plan.

South Walker Creek Project Manager Brendan Paton credited consistent communication between both parties for the result.

“We’ve got constant communication between Stanmore and Hastings Deering representatives, and the product delivery team has all but joined the Stanmore team in terms of project execution,” Paton said.

A Truck Described as the Jewel in the Hastings Deering Crown

Hastings Deering Resource Industries Account Manager Sean Ryan described the Cat 793 Next Gen as the standout product in the Company’s offering. Ryan emphasised the significance of having 31 units operating at a single site.

“We’re lucky enough to have 31 of them here at Stanmore. It really is a step change, upgrading the 793 to make the best better,” Ryan said.

The Cat 793 Next Gen fleet is described as a low-risk operational option for Stanmore, supported by the ongoing relationship with both Hastings Deering and Caterpillar.

South Walker Creek Mine and Its Growth Ambitions

The South Walker Creek mine sits within Queensland’s Bowen Basin and is operated by Stanmore Resources using truck-and-shovel methods. The operation currently produces more than six million metric tons per annum of high-quality pulverised coal injection for global steelmaking markets.

For Stanmore, the Cat 793 Next Gen rollout is not a standalone upgrade. It is positioned as a core element of the mine’s expansion plans, aligning fleet capability with long-term production targets.

“This is an integral part of South Walker Creek’s growth strategy. We’re trying to get bigger; we want to do more with less, and being able to increase our payload, increase our speeds and increase our safety performance fits extremely nicely with Stanmore’s overall business objectives,” Greig said.

Industry Outlook

The global mining equipment sector continues to see significant investment in next-generation haul truck technology, driven by operator demand for payload efficiency, fuel savings, and improved safety outcomes.

Australia’s metallurgical coal sector remains a key market for large-format mining trucks, with Bowen Basin operations consistently among the highest-volume deployments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Strategic partnerships between mining companies and original equipment manufacturers are increasingly the preferred model for large fleet rollouts, replacing transactional procurement with long-term, performance-focused arrangements.

Future Direction and Impact on Stanmore’s Operations at South Walker Creek Mine

The completion of the Cat 793 Next Gen rollout positions the South Walker Creek mine for improved output efficiency and cost competitiveness. Key points to watch include:

  • All 31 Cat 793 Next Gen trucks are on-site and operational as of March 2026, ahead of the original April 2026 timeline
  • The 264-metric-ton payload capacity improves pass matching across Stanmore’s existing 400- and 600-tonne digger fleet
  • ABS braking technology and the redesigned cab represent measurable gains in both safety performance and operator productivity
  • The individual HIN solution equivalent in this context — the fleet’s connectivity architecture — supports real-time data transfers and operational monitoring
  • Stanmore’s broader growth strategy targets higher production output, with Hastings Deering mining trucks central to that operational uplift
  • The South Walker Creek mine currently produces more than six million metric tons per annum, with the new fleet supporting further capacity growth

The Cat 793 Next Gen deployment at South Walker Creek mine demonstrates how tailored fleet partnerships can accelerate project timelines while delivering measurable performance outcomes for high-volume mining operations.
