Musk Declares New Political Movement Amid Feud with Trump
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced the formation of a new political organisation — the America Party — as he distances himself from his former ally, Donald Trump. The announcement came via Musk’s social media platform, X, on Saturday, following weeks of tension over Trump’s latest spending bill.
Musk declared, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” He accused both major parties of pushing the United States towards financial ruin through what he called “waste & graft”, insisting that Americans live under a “one-party system, not a democracy”.

A Split from Trump Over Spending
Elon Musk had previously stood as one of Trump’s strongest supporters, contributing $277 million to help secure Trump’s 2024 presidential win. Musk danced on stage at campaign rallies and even brought his young son to meet Trump at the White House.
Trump rewarded Musk with a key post in the administration, appointing him to lead the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency, or Doge. The department aimed to trim federal budgets and claimed it had saved $190 billion by slashing programs and positions.
But a turning point came when Trump pushed through his controversial spending bill — the so-called “big, beautiful bill” — which passed through the House and Senate despite criticism. Independent analysis suggested it would increase the US debt by $3.3 trillion over the next decade. Musk, now firmly against the legislation, slammed it on X and left the administration in May.

He went further, warning that every politician who supported the bill could face a primary challenge with financial backing from him. “Anyone who campaigned on the PROMISE of REDUCING SPENDING, but continues to vote on the BIGGEST DEBT ceiling increase in HISTORY will see their face on this poster in the primary next year,” Musk posted, alongside an image of Pinocchio with “LIAR” above it.
Launch of the America Party
Musk first hinted at forming a new political force when he ran a poll on X asking users whether the US needed a new party. Nearly two-thirds of over a million respondents said yes. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk declared on 5 July, the day after Trump signed the spending bill into law.

Although the America Party has not yet been formally registered with the Federal Election Commission, Musk hinted that it would target a select number of key congressional seats in the 2026 midterms. “One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he said, arguing that this strategy could give the new party decisive influence in Congress.
No Plans to Run for Office
Despite his prominent role in American politics, Musk cannot run for US president, as he was born in South Africa. He has not named any figure to lead the America Party or indicated that he plans to stand for political office in another form.
While the Musk brand is synonymous with innovation and disruption in technology, politics presents a new frontier filled with legal, institutional and logistical challenges. The entrenched two-party dominance in the US has historically thwarted third-party attempts. Recent efforts, such as the No Labels movement, failed to break the grip of Democrats and Republicans during the 2024 presidential election.
America Party Faces Hurdles
For now, Elon Musk appears to be relying on public momentum and his massive personal wealth to fuel this new venture. He has posted memes critical of the so-called “uniparty”, including an image of a two-headed snake marked with the logos of the Republican and Democratic parties. Responding to a user comment that said, “End the Uniparty,” Musk replied, “Yes.”
Although new political parties in the US are not required to register with the FEC until they cross certain funding or spending thresholds, Musk’s financial backing could push the America Party into official contention quickly if he starts campaigning or funding candidates.
Still, the venture’s long-term success will depend on more than viral posts and ideological opposition. To gain traction, the America Party will need infrastructure, candidates, a legislative agenda and sustained public support.
Political Fallout and Future Risks
Trump has not taken Musk’s defection lightly. On Truth Social, he accused Musk of being overly dependent on federal subsidies: “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head to South Africa.”
He also joked to reporters about turning Doge against Musk, saying, “We might have to put Doge on Elon. Doge is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible?”
Despite the threats, Musk continues to signal that his political involvement is far from over. As the 2026 midterms approach, the tech mogul appears determined to disrupt American politics just as he has disrupted industries ranging from cars to space.

Whether Elon Musk‘s America Party will truly shift the balance of power or simply create headlines remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Musk’s latest venture has already reignited debate over the role of money, influence and ideology in US politics.
