In a world-first for the Catholic Church, an American has ascended to the papacy. Cardinal Robert Prevost has been named Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Pope Francis and sparking immediate global reaction—not least from political heavyweights back home in the U.S.

Prevost, a native of Chicago and long-serving bishop with a reputation for theological depth and administrative prowess, becomes the first American to wear the papal white. But his historic appointment is already stirring political waters, particularly within the MAGA movement.

Congratulatory Words—With a Hint of Tension

Former President Donald Trump and his Vice President, J.D. Vance, offered public congratulations. Trump called Leo XIV’s election a “great honour for our country” and expressed hope for a future meeting. Vance echoed the sentiment, wishing him blessings in his leadership of the Church.

But the celebratory tone could be short-lived.

Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly voiced disapproval of the Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration and other conservative policies. A 2017 post shared by then-Cardinal Prevost stated, “I stand with the Dreamers and all people who are working towards an immigration system that is fair, just and moral.” He also endorsed articles criticizing Trump-era policies.

Progressive Views Rooted in Faith

Despite voting in Republican primaries between 2012 and 2016—records public due to his Illinois residency—Leo XIV’s positions show a strong alignment with Pope Francis’s socially progressive vision. His support for immigrants and emphasis on social justice are expected to shape his papacy.

This could create ideological friction with conservative political figures, especially those who often critique the Church’s growing engagement with climate change, wealth inequality, and migration.

A Church at a Crossroads Pope

As thousands cheered in St. Peter’s Square following the white smoke announcement, the broader Catholic community reflected on what Leo XIV’s election could mean for a Church facing deep global divides—between tradition and reform, politics and piety.

Whether he will soften his stance toward American conservatives—or double down on calls for justice and compassion—remains to be seen. One thing is clear: the Vatican is now under American leadership, and the world is watching closely.
