ChatGPT Restored After Global Disruptions as OpenAI Intensifies Work on Reliability

A pair of outages this week left many ChatGPT users unable to access the service, occurring as OpenAI pushes new internal urgency measures aimed at improving the chatbot’s performance and stability during a competitive period for the company.

Service Issues Interrupt Access for Thousands

ChatGPT users encountered errors on Tuesday when the platform began returning failed requests and loading problems. Many reported being logged out without warning, while others struggled to access their ongoing chats. OpenAI later confirmed the issue stemmed from a routing configuration problem that affected certain sessions.

A larger outage followed soon after. Downdetector received more than 12,500 incident reports from the United States, with additional cases from Europe, Asia, and Africa. The issue did not extend to the API or image-generation products, which continued operating normally. This pointed to an isolated problem inside the main ChatGPT interface rather than the broader infrastructure.

OpenAI acknowledged the disruptions on its status page and said engineers were working to correct the problem as soon as possible. Access returned gradually throughout the day, and most users were able to resume normal activity after refreshing the web app or relaunching the mobile version.

The company also shared a brief statement with CNBC, saying, “Some users briefly ran into issues using ChatGPT earlier today because of a routing misconfiguration. It’s now fixed.” The message helped reassure users waiting for updates while trying to reconnect to the system.

Businesses and organisations that rely on ChatGPT for internal operations reported temporary delays, though many regained full access once systems stabilised.

Security Notice Adds More Attention to System Safety

The outages followed a separate security development involving Mixpanel, one of OpenAI’s analytics partners. Mixpanel reported a security incident in which an attacker exported a dataset containing limited customer-identifiable information. The dataset included names, email addresses, and related analytics fields.

OpenAI said it was still assessing the scope, though it described the information as restricted in size. Even so, the notice prompted questions among developers who rely on OpenAI’s tooling for commercial applications. The company said it planned to tighten its monitoring processes around partnered systems.

The timing, coming just as the outages unfolded, added pressure on open technical teams already working to stabilize user access.

This push also means certain planned features will be delayed. Projects that may be rescheduled include in-platform advertising tools, health-focused AI assistants, shopping features, and the personal research assistant known as Pulse. Pulse, which received public praise from Altman, was expected to roll out more widely, but the company is now concentrating on strengthening its existing systems.

Competitive Pressure Builds as Rivals Expand Market Share

The renewed focus comes during a competitive period for the generative AI sector. OpenAI still leads the market, though recent web traffic data suggests some users have begun exploring alternatives. Reports indicate Google’s Gemini service has passed the 15 percent share mark after introducing new models that gained strong public engagement.

Gemini’s Nano Banana model drew further attention for its performance in scene-consistent image editing, while its larger Gemini 3 Pro model has been widely discussed following benchmark comparisons. These developments increased pressure on OpenAI to maintain an edge in performance and user experience across its products.
