The Royal Australian Mint has released a limited edition coin to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Historical Context
The Second World War began on 1 September 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, the Australian Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies declared that Australia was at war with Germany, following Britain’s lead. Australians primarily served in the Mediterranean and the Middle East in 1940 and 1941, before the Pacific theatre opened after Japan’s entry in December 1941.
Women actively contributed through branches of the Army, Navy and Air Force established in 1941. The Australian mainland came under attack for the first time during the bombing of Darwin in February 1942.

In addition to this coin, The Perth Mint also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II through a “Winged Victory” 1oz gold proof coin and a base metal coin presented in a stamp and coin cover. These products salute the victory in the Pacific and honour the legacy of those who fought for peace.
The Perth Mint’s Winged Victory coin portrays the Greek goddess Nike, symbolising strength and victory. Nike is shown with wings spread and clutching a sword and palm wreath. These designs draw on Australia’s wartime memorial heritage, including the iconic Marrickville Soldiers’ Memorial statue, now housed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The Royal Australian Mint’s commemorative coin and Perth Mint’s editions come with restricted mintages, enhancing their collector appeal. The Perth Mint’s Winged Victory limited mintage is 7,000 for the base metal coin and 5,000 for the silver proof coin. The gold proof coin is capped at 200 pieces globally.
The commemorations honour Victory in the Pacific Day, held on 15 August annually. This date marks Japan’s acceptance of Allied surrender terms on 14 August 1945, effectively ending hostilities.

The coin is obtainable through an Early Queue Lottery (EQL) ballot starting at 8:30 am AEDT on 3 November and closing at 8:30 am AEDT on 5 November 2025.
