A New Era for Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the all-new 2026 CLA, introducing a futuristic design and cutting-edge technology. The four-door coupe, set to arrive in Australia in the second half of 2026, marks the first vehicle built on Mercedes’ new MMA platform.
This new platform prioritises electric performance while offering a mild-hybrid alternative. The CLA will debut with battery-electric powertrains, followed by petrol-electric hybrids.

Impressive Range and Performance
A coupe of electric variants have been confirmed. The entry-level CLA 250+ with EQ Technology features an 85kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, powering a 200kW/335Nm motor on the rear axle. This setup delivers up to 792km of range (WLTP) and a 0-100km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds.

For those craving more power, the CLA 350 4Matic with EQ Technology adds an e-motor to the front axle, boosting output to 260kW/515Nm. This variant achieves 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, with a range of up to 771km.

Both versions use a two-speed transmission and support ultra-fast charging. On a 320kW DC fast charger, the CLA can add 325km of range in just 10 minutes. AC charging is capped at 11kW.
A more affordable version with a smaller 58kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery is expected later in the year, alongside mild-hybrid variants featuring turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engines.
AMG and the Future
Mercedes has yet to confirm how its high-performance AMG division will fit into the new CLA lineup. However, given the brand’s history, a sportier AMG variant is highly likely.

Design Evolution
Visually, the CLA remains true to its coupe-inspired roots but gains a more refined and aerodynamic appearance. Inspired by the 2023 Concept CLA, it features full-width lighting signatures, an illuminated solid grille, flush door handles, and aerodynamically optimised wheels.

The car has grown in size, now measuring:
- 4723mm long (+35mm)
- 2021mm wide (+22mm)
- 1468mm tall (+29mm)
- 2790mm wheelbase (+61mm)
Boot space has slightly decreased to 405 litres, though it is complemented by a 101-litre front trunk (‘frunk’).
A Tech-First Interior
Mercedes has embraced minimalism in the CLA’s cabin, eliminating almost all physical buttons. The centrepiece is the optional MBUX Superscreen, featuring:
- 25-inch digital instrument cluster
- 14-inch infotainment touchscreen
- 14-inch passenger display
All major vehicle controls, from climate settings to entertainment, are housed within these screens. Mercedes describes the setup as “the cleverest car” it has ever made.
A voice assistant powered by ChatGPT and Google Gemini AI can control various functions, including mood-sensitive ambient lighting. It can detect a passenger’s emotions and adjust lighting accordingly—green for happiness, red for frustration.
For entertainment, Mercedes offers Disney+ streaming and in-built games. Satellite navigation features 3D car and environment views, integrating Google Maps for real-time traffic updates.
A Burmester 3D surround sound system and a head-up display are optional extras.
Efficiency and Driving Dynamics
The CLA borrows efficiency-focused features from the Vision EQXX concept, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.21Cd. This helps extend driving range without sacrificing performance.
Its 800-volt system allows rapid charging, while a standard heat pump optimises energy use in extreme temperatures.
The CLA will also be the first to run Mercedes-Benz’s new Operating System (MB.OS), which enables over-the-air updates, improving everything from safety systems to infotainment functions.
The End of the A-Class
The CLA’s arrival signals a shift for Mercedes’ compact lineup. The popular A-Class hatchback will soon be discontinued, with the CLA sedan, CLA wagon, and GLA and GLB SUVs forming the brand’s new entry-level range.
Australian Availability and Pricing
Mercedes-Benz Australia will announce pricing and specifications closer to the local launch. However, given the CLA’s technological leap, expect a price increase over the current CLA 200 ($72,400 plus on-road costs).
With its sleek design, long-range electric capability, and cutting-edge technology, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA is set to redefine the compact luxury segment.
