2025 BYD Sealion 7: Specs Revealed Ahead of Australian Launch

The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 is set to shake up the Australian electric SUV market. A leaked spec sheet has revealed details about this highly anticipated vehicle, which is expected to rival the Tesla Model Y. The new EV will launch this month, and pricing will start below $60,000.

Two Variants: Premium and Performance

BYD will offer the Sealion 7 in two versions: the Premium and Performance models. The Premium comes with a single rear-mounted motor, while the Performance has a dual-motor setup.

The Premium variant produces 230 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and has a range of 482 km (WLTP).

The Performance variant delivers 390 kW and 690 Nm of torque. This model features a 230 kW rear motor and a 160 kW front motor. It achieves 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and has a range of 456 km. The Performance model also boasts a top speed of 215 km/h, which exceeds the BYD Seal’s 180 km/h limit.

Both variants use an 82.56 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BYD Blade battery. They support 150 kW DC fast charging and 11 kW AC charging. Unlike other BYD models that are limited to 7 kW AC charging, the Sealion 7 offers better home charging options.

Advanced Features and Safety

The BYD Sealion 7 comes packed with features designed to enhance safety and convenience. The vehicle includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Rear cross-traffic assist
  • Front cross-traffic assist
  • Safe exit warning
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Surround-view camera
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Dual front airbags plus a driver’s far-side airbag
  • Side and curtain airbags for both rows

The Sealion 7 has yet to receive an ANCAP or Euro NCAP safety rating.

Premium Interior and Tech Features

The Sealion 7 features a modern and well-equipped interior. The Premium variant includes:

  • A 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto
  • A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
  • A head-up display
  • A 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system
  • A panoramic glass roof
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • A power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function

The Performance model adds:

  • Heated rear seats
  • A heated steering wheel
  • 20-inch alloy wheels with painted brake calipers

Only a black interior is available. Other BYD models offer lighter interior options, but the Sealion 7 does not.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Functionality

The Sealion 7 includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. This feature allows owners to use the car’s battery to power external devices. A V2L discharge adapter will let users connect appliances when the vehicle is not in use.

Spacious Yet Compact Design

The Sealion 7 measures 4830mm in length, 1925mm in width, and 1620mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2930mm, making it longer than both the BYD Atto 3 and the Tesla Model Y.

Despite its length, the Sealion 7 has less cargo space than the Model Y. The rear cargo area provides 500 litres, while the front trunk (frunk) offers 58 litres. This is significantly smaller than the Model Y’s 117-litre frunk.

Colour Options and Pricing Expectations

BYD will offer the Sealion 7 in four colours:

  • Atlantis Grey
  • Cosmos Black
  • Aurora White
  • Shark Grey (the only premium colour option)

Pricing for the Sealion 7 has not been officially announced. However, BYD’s local distributor, EV Direct, has confirmed it will start under $60,000.

Australian Testing and Launch

The Sealion 7 has been seen testing in Australia for the past six months. Less than two weeks ago, an uncamouflaged unit was spotted ahead of the official launch in February.

Andrew W, a BYD enthusiast from the BYD Sealion 7 Australia Facebook group, shared the leaked specifications online. “The upcoming mid-sized SUV will come in an entry-level single-motor Premium variant and a dual-motor Performance variant,” he wrote.

Wrapping Up!

The BYD Sealion 7 is shaping up to be a strong competitor in Australia’s EV market. With advanced technology, a spacious interior, and a competitive price, it aims to challenge the Tesla Model Y. Official pricing details will be announced soon, and the Sealion 7 is expected to be a best-seller for BYD.
