Paramedics treated the man at the scene, but he tragically died. He is yet to be formally identified. Witnesses described the aftermath as chaotic, with around 20 police cars and multiple paramedics attending.

Police used large blue tarps and a tent to shield the scene from public view while emergency crews worked to lift the carriage using a hydraulic jack. The man, believed to be in his 40s and reportedly wearing high-vis clothing, was found under the tram.

“On arrival, officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command found a man, believed to be aged in his 40s under the carriage,” NSW Police said in a statement. “The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however he died at the scene.”

Transport Disruptions and Ongoing Investigation

Transport for NSW confirmed that L2 and L3 light rail services are not operating between Moore Park and Central. Services are continuing between Moore Park and Randwick, and Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford. Passengers have been urged to take alternate transport or delay their travel.

Transport authorities have requested replacement buses, though these are not yet in operation.

A crime scene has been established, and police have launched an investigation into the incident. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Recent Light Rail Tragedy Recalled

This incident follows a similar fatal accident in May 2023, when 16-year-old Kyra Dulguime was killed after becoming trapped under a tram in Haymarket. She was struck after attempting to cross the tracks between two carriages as the tram began to move.

Thursday’s tragedy has reignited concerns about pedestrian safety around Sydney’s light rail network.
