Squid Game Season 3 Drops June 27 with Final Deadly Showdown

Final Season Set for Global Netflix Release

Netflix will release Squid Game Season 3 globally on Friday, 27 June. The entire third and final season will drop simultaneously. Viewers in Australia can begin watching from 5:00pm AEST. The new season continues the story of Seong Gi-hun, known as Player 456, as he returns to the brutal underground competition. The show, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, has captivated audiences since 2021 with its deadly twist on childhood games.

Six New Episodes to Conclude the Series

Season 3 of Squid Game consists of six episodes, all available at once on Netflix. The plot resumes following Season 2’s devastating ending. Gi-hun failed to end the deadly games and watched his best friend die at the hands of the Front Man.

In a sneak peek released by Netflix, Gi-hun is returned to the dormitory in a gift-box coffin. His allies express relief at his survival. However, actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, said the return felt like entering “a different universe”.

Creator Hwang Explains Gi-hun’s Return

Lee Jung-jae said: “When the coffin is opened, Gi-hun is reborn. He has to go back to the competition, play the game again, and make choices again.”

The Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun, will escalate the challenge. He aims to break Gi-hun’s moral code through new trials. Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed: “For Front Man, sending Gi-hun back to the game — rather than killing him — makes sense. He wants Gi-hun to really feel and understand the heavy price of his own mistakes.”

Front Man’s Goals Take Centre Stage

Hwang said the Front Man believes Gi-hun will eventually abandon his faith in humanity and himself. Lee Byung-hun explained: “Front Man wants to dismantle the noble belief that Gi-hun holds on to. Front Man believes that Gi-hun will inevitably change to think just like him.”

The conflict between Gi-hun and the Front Man will form the emotional core of the season.

Key Survivors and Characters Return

Season 3 features the return of several characters who survived the previous season.

Returning cast includes:

  • Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, Player 456
  • Wi Ha-joon as Detective Hwang Jun-ho

These characters will navigate the latest iteration of the games, each carrying emotional scars from past rounds.

Recap: Season 2’s Failed Rebellion

Season 2 followed Gi-hun as he infiltrated the games again to dismantle them. He hoped Detective Hwang could locate the island using his participation.

Gi-hun’s efforts to save lives drew the attention of the Front Man, who entered the game as Player 001. The two convinced other players to rebel. However, the rebellion collapsed. The Front Man murdered Park Jung-bae and exposed Gi-hun’s failure.

Characters including pregnant Player 222 and her partner, crypto promoter Player 333, survived. Also alive are Players 149 and 007, the mother-son duo, and Player 120.

Player 388 hid instead of returning with support, contributing to the failed uprising.

Netflix Confirms Global Binge Release

Netflix confirmed all six episodes of Squid Game Season 3 will be available on 27 June. This includes a simultaneous release in Australia at 5:00pm AEST.

The third season brings the show to its conclusion. Gi-hun’s battle against the system and the Front Man will determine the fate of all remaining players.

Hwang Dong-hyuk has promised a final act that closes the story without compromising its core themes.
