Flight Centre Travel Group (ASX: FLT) has expanded its footprint in the European cruise market by acquiring Cruise Club UK. With this acquisition, Flight Centre aims to fast-track growth in the UK, leveraging a model similar to its successful Australian subsidiary, Ignite Travel.
Strategic Acquisition to Boost UK Operations
Cruise Club UK, a Manchester-based business with 35 employees, recorded approximately $40 million in revenue for FY24. The company uses a call-centre model to sell cruise packages and operates a Business Travel Centre for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The acquisition will see Ignite Travel founder and former Gold Coast Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Randall Deer, assume the role of Managing Director at Cruise Club UK. Deer will collaborate closely with Ignite Travel’s CEO, Ryan Thomas, to implement Flight Centre’s strategic plans.
Ignite Travel’s Model to Propel UK Success
Flight Centre plans to apply the same model used by Ignite Travel’s MyCruises brand in Australia to grow Cruise Club UK. MyCruises generated over $500 million in total transaction value in FY24, achieving annual growth of more than 20%.
“We aim to replicate the Australian success in the UK, one of the world’s top cruise markets,” said Flight Centre’s Leisure CEO, James Kavanagh. “The UK cruise market is estimated to be double the size of Australia’s, presenting significant growth opportunities.”
New UK Offerings with Exclusive Packages
The company intends to capitalise on Ignite’s procurement, packaging, and advertising expertise to deliver additional value for customers. Kavanagh noted that suppliers and customers have already shown strong support for a MyCruises-style trial conducted by Cruise Club UK.
“Our strategy is to broaden the product offering by incorporating the exclusive packages MyCruises is known for,” Kavanagh said. “We’re excited to collaborate with the Cruise Club UK team to build on their 30-year foundation.”

Focus on Strengthening Northern Hemisphere Presence
Flight Centre CEO Graham Turner described the acquisition as a “small but important step” in the company’s northern hemisphere expansion. Turner highlighted the UK and the US as key markets with strong growth potential.
“This acquisition allows us to launch in the UK quickly and cost-effectively, with access to expertise and systems we lacked locally,” Turner said. “It also diversifies our UK leisure offering.”
The acquisition follows Flight Centre’s launch of the Cruiseabout brand and its CruiseHQ wholesale business in Australia, underlining the group’s focus on cruise growth.
Cruise Club UK Founders Continue with the Business
Cruise Club UK was founded by Paul Edge, who served as its major shareholder. Edge and his son, Paul Edge Jr., will remain actively involved in the company as it integrates with Ignite Travel’s operations.
Flight Centre will fund the acquisition from its existing cash reserves, noting that the deal’s financial impact is not material to its overall business.
Positioning for Future Growth in Europe and Beyond
Flight Centre’s leadership believes the Cruise Club UK acquisition aligns with its broader objective of increasing margins through tour and cruise sales. Kavanagh emphasised the company’s commitment to becoming a leading leisure travel provider in the UK.
“This acquisition strengthens our ability to serve the UK market while mirroring our Australian success,” Kavanagh said. “We’re confident in the potential of this venture as we expand Ignite’s international offerings.”
Flight Centre is optimistic about future prospects across both the UK and US markets. Turner stressed that the company will pursue further growth opportunities, both organically and through strategic acquisitions.
Conclusion
Flight Centre’s acquisition of Cruise Club UK underscores its commitment to the European cruise market. With Ignite Travel’s proven model and experienced leadership, the company is well-positioned to capitalise on the UK’s thriving cruise industry.
This move not only expands Flight Centre’s leisure portfolio but also strengthens its ability to compete in the northern hemisphere’s lucrative travel markets. As Cruise Club UK integrates with Ignite, Flight Centre looks set to build on its momentum and chart a course for sustained international growth.
