Chicago endured its most violent Labor Day weekend in recent years, with 54 people shot and seven killed across multiple incidents, as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker categorically rejected President Donald Trump’s proposal to deploy National Guard troops to combat the city’s crime surge.
The weekend carnage unfolded between Friday evening and early Tuesday morning, marking a significant escalation from last year’s Labor Day period when 31 people were shot and five killed, according to Chicago Police Department data.
Mass Shootings Rock Multiple Neighbourhoods
The violence peaked with several mass shooting incidents that left communities reeling. The most significant occurred in the Bronzeville neighbourhood, where seven people were wounded in a drive-by shooting near South State Street at 11:10 PM Saturday. Police report that occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire on a crowd, injuring five men and two women aged between 28 and 32.
A second mass shooting in the same weekend struck Humboldt Park, where four people were wounded in another drive-by incident on West Haddon Avenue. Hours later, a gathering near Ellis Park turned deadly when five people were shot, including a 17-year-old boy who remains in critical condition.
The weekend’s fatalities began Friday night in South Shore, where a 25-year-old woman was shot dead inside an apartment. Saturday’s violence continued in East Garfield Park, where a 29-year-old man was killed when a suspect exited a dark SUV and opened fire, and in Altgeld Gardens, where a 43-year-old woman was gunned down by five armed men.
Political Standoff Intensifies
The weekend violence occurred against the backdrop of an escalating political confrontation between Trump and Illinois Democratic leadership. Trump posted on social media Saturday, warning Pritzker to “better straighten it out, FAST, or we’re coming!” in reference to Chicago’s crime situation.
Pritzker responded defiantly during a press conference last week, stating: “Do not come to Chicago, you are neither wanted here nor needed here. Donald Trump wants to use the military to occupy a U.S. city to punish its dissidents and score political points“.

The dispute centres on Trump’s plan to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to Chicago, similar to actions taken in Washington DC and Los Angeles. Pentagon officials have reportedly been planning a Chicago deployment for weeks, with mobilisation of several thousand National Guard troops potentially beginning in September.
Crime Statistics Paint Complex Picture
Despite the weekend’s violence, Chicago officials point to overall crime reduction trends. City data shows violent crime has dropped 22% in the first half of 2025, with shootings down 37% and homicides decreased by 32% compared to the same period in 2024.
However, criminologist Arthur Lurigio from Loyola University Chicago noted: “Violence has not overall been increased, it’s been going down, but this weekend is a particularly violent weekend, and it coincides with a time the president has talked about bringing troops to Chicago“.
Legal and Constitutional Questions
Legal experts suggest Trump’s authority to deploy National Guard troops over state objections is limited to rare situations involving invasion, rebellion, or executing federal laws – conditions that may not apply to Chicago’s current situation.
Former Chicago Inspector General Joe Ferguson warned that while sending National Guard for law enforcement would typically be illegal, “we’re living in an age in which what is happening out of Washington is irrespective of whether something would appear to be unlawful or unconstitutional”.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has taken proactive steps, signing an executive order Saturday prohibiting local police from cooperating with federal forces. “This executive order makes it emphatically clear that this president is not going to come in and deputise our police department,” Johnson stated.

Violence prevention advocates expressed mixed reactions to the weekend’s events. Charles McKenzie from Englewood First Responders said: “Every time I hear about violent crimes like that, it’s hurtful. We do so much work to prevent gun violence, but I don’t believe the National Guard should be in Chicago“.
The weekend’s toll brings Chicago’s 2025 homicide count to 272, including 225 fatal shootings, according to city data.
