Monzo Bank experienced a widespread app outage across the United Kingdom on Tuesday afternoon, leaving customers unable to use several digital features for a short period, while core banking services continued to operate through the lender’s independent backup system.

Reports of problems began shortly after 3 pm on Tuesday, according to outage tracking site DownDetector. Users across the country said they could not access parts of the Monzo app. Many reported failed logins, missing balances, and stalled payment screens.

The number of reports rose sharply around 3.16 pm, when thousands of customers flagged difficulties. Some said they could see balances but could not move money. Others said the app would not load at all on their phones.

Monzo acknowledged the issue within its app. A banner warned customers that the app was not fully functional. The notice added that engineers were aware of the disruption and were working to restore normal service.

At the same time, Monzo’s public status page confirmed that platform problems had been detected. The page did not provide a cause. It also gave no estimate for when full service would return.

What customers could still do during the outage

Despite the app disruption, Monzo said core banking services continued to operate. Customers could still make payments with their cards. Cash withdrawals from cash machines also worked as usual during the outage.

The bank activated a feature known as Monzo Stand-In. This is a fully independent backup bank that runs when the main system is affected. It allows basic transactions to continue even when the main platform is unavailable.

Through Stand-In, users could send and receive bank transfers. They could also freeze their cards if required. Viewing balances and recent transactions remained possible for many customers.

These measures ensured that everyday spending could continue. However, several app features remained unavailable until the issue was resolved later in the afternoon.

Customer reactions on social media and DownDetector

As the outage continued, many customers took to social media to report problems. Some posted on X, which itself experienced brief disruption earlier that day. Screenshots of error messages and stalled screens were widely shared.

One user wrote that bills were due and asked how long the problem would last. Another said they needed to shop and could not access key features. These posts gained attention as the number of affected users increased.

DownDetector recorded more than 4,000 reports during the peak of the disruption. One user wrote that transferring money between pots had stopped working. Another said that only balances were visible.

The steady flow of online posts showed the level of frustration. Many users rely on Monzo as their main current account. That reliance made the temporary loss of app features more noticeable.

Monzo confirms service has been restored

By late afternoon, Monzo announced that the issue had been fixed. The bank said customers could now use the app as normal. It confirmed that the Stand-In system had been activated during the investigation.

A spokesperson said the backup system allowed customers to continue making card payments and cash withdrawals. They also confirmed that bank transfers and card freezes remained available throughout the disruption.

The statement added that the problem had been short-lived. Monzo did not give details on the technical cause. It also did not say whether any data had been affected.

After the update, reports on DownDetector began to fall. Many users later confirmed that full access had returned. The status page also removed warnings of degraded performance.

Wider digital disruption on the same day

The Monzo outage occurred on a day marked by other online problems. Earlier on Tuesday, X experienced widespread disruption across the UK and the United States. Users reported feeds and profiles failing to load.

Although the two incidents were not linked, the timing drew attention. Both events affected millions of people who rely on digital services for daily tasks. As a result, online discussions compared the disruptions.

Some Monzo customers noted on X that both platforms were affected at the same time. This added to the sense of frustration among users who rely heavily on mobile services.

The broader technology sector has faced repeated service interruptions in recent years. Major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Cloudflare have previously caused knock-on issues for banks and payment firms.

Monzo’s growing role in everyday banking

Monzo received its full UK banking licence in 2017. Since then, it has grown into one of the country’s largest digital banks. The lender now has more than nine million customers across the United Kingdom.

Many users now treat Monzo as their primary current account. That shift has raised expectations around reliability and uptime. When issues occur, the effect is felt across a wide customer base.

During the outage, some users said they could only see money held in pots. Others said they could not make in-app payments. These reports showed how much daily activity runs through the platform.

The bank has now confirmed that normal service has resumed. Customers can again use all app features without restriction.
