Investor Focus Shifts to Suriname as Critical Resources Strengthens Project Capability

Critical Resources is advancing its Suriname gold strategy as specialist structural analysis targets prospective areas across the Guiana Shield.
Investor Focus Shifts to Suriname as Critical Resources Strengthens Project Capability

Critical Resources Limited (ASX: CRR) is strengthening its Suriname strategy through specialist structural analysis. The company has engaged GexplOre to assess its Suriname gold projects under exclusivity.

The study will also cover more than 6,000 km² of surrounding greenstone belt. GexplOre has worked across around 20 gold projects in the Guiana Shield. Its experience includes G Mining Ventures’ Oko West in Guyana and Founders Metals’ Antino in Suriname. The work aims to establish an early structural framework for exploration.

The company is pursuing the Gonini and Greenstars Gold Projects. Together, they comprise approximately 199 km² of granted gold exploitation rights. Critical Resources secured exclusivity over both projects in September 2026. The company is seeking 90% interests, subject to conditions precedent. Due diligence has also been fast-tracked across legal, title and technical areas. Site visits are planned in the coming weeks.

Why Structure Matters For Suriname Gold Exploration

The gold mineralisation in Suriname’s greenstone belt is found at important geological structures. These include shear zones, fold hinges and granitoid-greenstone contacts. In highly weathered and heavily forested areas, this type of control is essential. In the local area, the saprolite and laterite can be over 100m deep at certain locations in Suriname. Surface exposure is also reduced in dense forest.

The SRTM elevation data and ASTER multispectral data will be processed by GexplOre. The work will involve mapping host rocks, faults, shear corridors and folding events. Published research links D2 folding with gold concentration across Guiana Shield systems. Earlier D1 structures can provide pathways for gold-bearing fluids. These factors will support prospectivity rankings.

The program has three key components:

  • Stage 1: Detailed interpretation across two priority areas at Gonini.
  • Stage 2: Regional review covering more than 6,000 km².
  • Target ranking: Structural domains will be ranked by gold prospectivity.

The results can guide mapping, LiDAR, auger geochemistry and trenching. This creates a focused pathway towards future drilling targets.

Critical Resources Suriname Projects Build Regional Exposure

Gonini is located within the historic Sara Creek gold district. Critical Resources is seeking a 90% interest in approximately 164 km². Gold was discovered at Sara Creek in 1876. Small-scale mining has continued since then. However, there is no record of modern systematic exploration across the rights.

Greenstars covers approximately 35 km² in the Para District. The project lies west of the Saramacca River. It is approximately 35 km west of Zijin’s Rosebel gold mine. The project is road-accessible from Paramaribo. Small-scale alluvial workings are also active nearby.

Gonini sits within the Marowijne greenstone belt. It is approximately 66 km from Newmont’s Merian mine. It is also approximately 88 km from Zijin’s Rosebel mine. These operations highlight the region’s established gold endowment. However, nearby deposits do not indicate Gonini’s mineralisation potential.

Suriname Mining Investment Opportunities Attract Capital

Suriname is a known gold producer in the Guiana Shield. Rosebel has been in operation since 2004, and Merian began in 2016. It is said that Rosebel’s production was 5.65 Moz during the period from 2004 to 2021. In 2023, Zijin purchased the mine from IAMGOLD for a whopping US$360 million. Merian’s gold reserves started at 5.1 Moz.

Gold represented approximately 79% of Suriname’s exports in 2024. Those exports were valued at around US$2.0 billion. Recent investment has also increased attention on Suriname resource exploration companies. Gold Fields invested C$77 million in Founders Metals. It now holds approximately 19.9%. La Mancha holds 19.9% of both Miata Metals and Greenheart Gold.

Critical Resources becomes the first ASX-listed Australian company in many decades to explore for gold in Suriname. The strategy gives ASX investors exposure to the Guiana Shield. It also expands the company’s gold exploration footprint.

Due Diligence And Exploration Next Steps

Critical Resources is progressing several workstreams before acquisition completion:

  • Legal and title: Counsel is reviewing title, registration and corporate records.
  • Technical: Vendor data will be integrated with GMD regional geology.
  • Site visits: Management will inspect both projects in the coming weeks.
  • Field planning: Ranked targets will guide future exploration programs.

GexplOre’s Stage 1 interpretation is expected by mid-November 2026. Critical Resources will combine those results with existing geological information. Artisanal workings and vendor data will also support target ranking. The company plans to use the results for LiDAR, auger geochemistry and trenching.

Completion remains subject to due diligence and formal agreements. Ministerial approval and GMD confirmation are also required. There is no certainty that either acquisition will complete.

Investor Outlook For Suriname Resource Exploration

Critical Resources is using structural science to accelerate its Suriname strategy. The company aims to progress from historical workings towards modern drill targets. Existing access and camp infrastructure could support future exploration. The regional review may also identify additional opportunities across the Guiana Shield.

Upcoming Milestones are significant for investors who are looking into Suriname mining investment opportunities. The Stage 1 results ought to further narrow down the initial target pipeline. Additional technical and operational information will be given during site visits. Targeted field programs could start soon if successful.
