Suresh Vadnagra will take over as Managing Director and CEO, effective from 5 Oct 2026. This comes on the same day as the fresh production update and a succession plan for its chairman.

Suresh Vadnagra Steps In As Northern Star Resources’ New CEO 2026

Northern Star confirmed it in an ASX announcement on 2 Jul 2026. Vadnagra steps into the shoes worn by Stuart Tonkin for the past 13 years.

Northern Star described Mr Vadnagra as a mining executive with more than 25 years across strategy and operations. He currently heads Glencore’s Nickel and Zinc Industrial Assets from Switzerland.

Leadership Transition Timeline

The handover will not happen overnight. The Board has built in a bridging period to keep things steady.

  • Stu Tonkin steps down as Managing Director and CEO during the first quarter of FY27
  • Ryan Gurner, current Chief Financial Officer, becomes deputy CEO immediately
  • Ryan Gurner serves as interim CEO between Tonkin’s exit and Vadnagra’s start
  • Suresh Vadnagra formally begins the role on 5 Oct 2026

A Global Mining Career

Suresh Vadnagra previously served as Chief Technical and Projects Officer at Newcrest. He oversaw major growth projects including Red Chris and Cadia’s future panel caves.

Earlier roles include stints at BHP, Iluka Resources and MMG. At MMG, he led the ramp-up of Las Bambas, one of the world’s largest copper mines by output.

Northern Star Resources CEO Australia Pay Package Explained

Northern Star Resources CEO Australia remuneration has been set with a long runway in mind. The package leans heavily on performance rather than a flat salary.

Mr Vadnagra’s Total Fixed Remuneration sits at $2,200,000 per annum, reviewed annually. His maximum Short-Term Incentive opportunity is 140 per cent of that figure, pro-rated for FY27.

There is more on the table too: two Long-Term Incentive tranches worth up to $4,400,000 each, running to 30 Jun 2029 and 30 Jun 2030. On top of that, $4,000,000 in sign-on rights and a $1,600,000 cash payment make up for what he left behind at his old job.

Record Gold Production Caps Strong Financial Year

Northern Star delivered a solid finish to FY26. Preliminary gold sold for the June quarter reached 433koz.

That result pushed full-year gold sold to 1,543koz, ahead of the revised Group guidance of above 1,500koz.

  • Kalgoorlie Production Centre sold 844koz for FY26, including 468koz from KCGM
  • Yandal Production Centre sold 434koz, meeting revised guidance of above 420koz
  • Pogo sold 265koz, above the revised guidance of 250koz
  • Cash and bullion totalled A$1,255 million as of 30 Jun 2026, up from A$1,183 million as of 31 Mar 2026
  • The Company holds no corporate bank debt
  • A$129 million in shares were bought back during the quarter under the A$500 million buy-back program

KCGM Mill Expansion Project Progressing To Plan

The KCGM Mill Expansion Project remains on schedule after three years of construction. Stage I lifts throughput capacity from 13Mtpa to 27Mtpa.

Commissioning for Stage I is expected in early FY27. Stage II, which consolidates the Gidji facility into the new Fimiston mill, is due for completion by the end of calendar 2026.

Chairman Succession Adds To Governance Shake-up

Northern Star also confirmed a change at the top of the Board. Michael Ashforth will succeed Michael Chaney AO as Chairman, effective from the conclusion of the 2026 Annual General Meeting.

Industry Outlook: Gold Sector Momentum Continues

As to gold, you can read all about that in the World Gold Council’s mid-year outlook on gold. In January it broke US$5,500 an ounce, and by late June it was under US$4,000.

In fact, even after that pullback, gold remains one of the better-performing assets so far this year. Analysts see it holding a range for now, but a rate shift or fresh geopolitical stress could send it back toward US$4,500 or beyond.
