Is AI Really a Necessity? Nvidia’s CFO Has the Answer

Nvidia CFO says AI is now essential as global spending on AI infrastructure continues to surge.

Nvidia’s Chief Financial Officer, Colette Kress, said that it’s now essential for all businesses to be leveraging AI. She spoke during a call to release the latest earnings results on the 20th May 2026: “AI is no longer a nice-to-have, AI is a need to enable productivity across all industries and roles”.

This quote, accompanied by Nvidia’s strong financial results across all business areas, demonstrates the shift occurring in business spending on AI.

Nvidia CFO on AI Demand Driving Record Company Revenue

Nvidia had its best quarter yet in the first three months of its 2027 financial year. The company brought in over eighty-one billion dollars in revenue. That was up eighty-five percent compared to the same time the year before.

The biggest driver was its Data Center business. That unit alone brought in over seventy-five billion dollars. It grew ninety-two percent compared to the previous year. The unit sells chips, networking tools, and computing systems that businesses use to run AI.

Large AI data center

Large cloud companies made up about half of that Data Center revenue. The other half came from AI firms, regular businesses, and governments around the world.

Growing Customer Base Fuels AI Infrastructure Investment

It is this wider group that Nvidia can now sell to. Kress mentioned there has been an increase in demand from smaller AI companies, big businesses and governments. This indicates how the spend in AI tools and systems is growing.

Well-known tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta all use Nvidia chips. So do AI research groups like OpenAI, new technology startups, and various government bodies.

Demand for AI computing power no longer comes from just one type of buyer. It now comes from many different industries in many different countries.

Nvidia’s Company Value Reflects the AI Spending Boom

Nvidia’s overall value has grown sharply over the past few years. In 2022 the company’s worth was under four hundred billion dollars. By 2024 it was already three trillion plus. It had broken past the five trillion dollars mark in 2025, into 2026.

Unlike its biggest customers, Nvidia does not build large data centers itself. Instead, it sells the chips, software, and networking gear that others use to build and run those centers. That keeps its own costs lower while still benefiting from the wider boom.

This approach puts Nvidia in a strong position without taking on the same level of spending as the companies it sells to.

Nvidia Projects Massive Global AI Spending Through 2030

The amount of money that is entering AI infrastructure is tremendous in Nvidia’s opinion over the next few years. Nvidia predicts that over the course of the next decade, global spending will be anywhere from 3 to 4 trillion dollars per year on the implementation of an AI system.

AI computing power is no longer seen as just a tech cost. Many companies now treat it as a key business tool. Having the right chips, systems, and data center access can shape how fast a company grows with AI.

Kress has led Nvidia’s finances through this fast-growth period. She joined the company in 2013. Before that, she held senior finance roles at Cisco, Microsoft, and Texas Instruments. Her view is that this spending cycle still has a long way to go.
