China’s President Xi Jinping held a rare phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on economic ties and technology matters, occurring as Washington continued high-level meetings in Geneva on a revised peace proposal for the war in Ukraine.

China’s state media reported that Xi Jinping and Donald Trump held a scheduled phone discussion that centred on trade relations, market access, and the future of Chinese technology firms operating in the United States. The conversation did not shift into wider confrontations, even as global tension surrounding security issues remained active elsewhere.
During the call, both sides restated the need for stable economic channels as they navigate sensitive areas such as technology restrictions and ongoing disputes around data-driven platforms. The mention of TikTok’s future in the U.S. market formed part of the exchange, reflecting Washington’s continued push for regulatory clarity.
Rare Dialogue Amid Rising Regional Strains
The timing of the phone call stood out, coming as pressure in the region stayed high following recent warnings from Japan over rising cross-strait challenges. Those warnings had put additional attention on Washington’s ties with Beijing, though neither leader used the call to escalate the conversation into security issues.
Instead, the exchange aimed to reopen practical channels after a long stretch of limited communication. Observers noted that Beijing’s public messaging described the interaction as constructive, focusing on predictable trade flows and the reopening of economic cooperation.
Geneva Talks Move Forward on Ukraine Peace Draft
While the Xi–Trump call captured attention in Asia, U.S. and Ukrainian officials were in Geneva working through a revised version of Trump’s 28-point peace proposal. The proposal has been a central part of Washington’s attempt to chart a path toward ending the conflict, though many European governments have voiced concern over earlier terms.

Ukraine’s team stated that the new draft addressed several of its central demands, especially regarding long-term defence support and economic rebuilding. The meeting produced a structure that Kyiv said it would now examine in detail.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later stated that his government would study the document alongside European partners, seeking a unified position before moving to the next round of talks. His remarks followed days of rapid back-and-forth consultations with Western allies.
Trump Intensifies Public Messaging as Deadline Nears
Trump, meanwhile, continued posting on social media as negotiations progressed. In one message, he repeated that the proposal was “not my final offer,” pushing for quicker movement from Kyiv.
In another post, he accused Ukrainian leaders of showing “zero gratitude,” directing frustration toward both Ukraine and European governments. His remarks added pressure at a sensitive moment in the process, though negotiators in Geneva continued their work despite the rhetoric.
Europe Voices Concern Over Territorial and Military Terms
Several European governments raised questions about previous versions of the plan, which included conditions for territorial concessions, restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities, and the suspension of its NATO path. These issues remained the most debated elements, particularly for Eastern European member states.
European officials have repeatedly said that any framework must protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. They also stressed that borders altered by force should not be validated, making territorial clauses the hardest to reconcile.

The situation left open questions about Russia’s position and whether the newer draft might shift its earlier stance. Analysts have noted that the original blueprint contained elements Moscow could interpret as the basis for negotiation, though the revised structure is expected to strengthen Kyiv’s preferences.
