What led to James Hooper’s immediate dismissal?
Senior NRL journalist James Hooper has been sacked from Fox Sports after an eventful night of drink-driving.
It is alleged by NSW Police that Hooper crashed his car into three parked vehicles in Leichhardt on 26 July 2025.
Reportedly, he gave a reading of 0.253 for blood alcohol-retention, more than five times the legal limit for driving.
The limit in NSW is 0.05, and Hooper’s reading falls into the high-range category.
He was charged by police with drink-driving in the high range as well as three counts of destroying or damaging property.
Shortly after, Fox Sports dismissed Hooper.
The broadcaster issued a short and sweet statement: “Fox Sports can confirm James Hooper has been terminated.”
There were no further comments by the network as far as internal handling of the matter was concerned.
Was this Hooper’s first offence?
This was not the first time James Hooper was under scrutiny in his public role.
The 50-year-old journalist has openly spoken about personal issues, such as alcohol.
In 2021, Hooper revealed on social media that he had been battling with long-standing drinking problems.
While support was expressed by the public after his admission, it is in fact this particular incident that has invited very serious consequences.
Before his arrest, Hooper was already an established NRL media personage known for his very forthright comments.
He was a familiar face on Fox League panels maximally related to NRL 360, as well as in game-day coverage and analysis.
He was a regular presence outside the stadium as well, reporting on Triple M as a sideline reporter and rugby league analyst.

Fox Sports cited the serious nature of the incident
Internal sources said that Hooper’s removal was decided speedily and without mercy-to-appear. Management at Fox Sports reportedly viewed the charge as incompatible with his high-profile media responsibilities.
A senior executive told The Daily Telegraph: “While the incident was regrettable, action had to be taken. We acknowledge James’s past contributions, but we must uphold standards expected by our audience.”
The NRL ecosystem responded quickly, with some players and media colleagues expressing concern for his well-being. Many described him as a “passionate” yet “complex” person who over time has been troubled by personal demons.
Has James Hooper addressed the allegations?
In formal declarations concerning the charges and termination, Hooper stated, “I’ve let my wife, kids, employers and the rugby league community down;” adding that the incident was “inexcusable” and was a “wake-up call” of sorts for him in his personal life. Hooper said he will be stepping away from all media roles while he focuses on his recovery and receiving professional help. He expressed deep remorse for what had been done, the damage caused, and the broken trust of the American people.
To date, Hooper has yet to plead, and his counsel has not commented publicly about the matter. He is slated to face these four counts before the court on 15 September 2025.
Hooper resigns from Triple M after Fox Sports departure
Following the Fox Sports dismissal James Hooper resigned also from Triple M radio commitments.
He was a key sideline personality with the NRL broadcast team of Triple M and a regular voice on game day.
Management of Southern Cross Austereo has refused to have the matter confirmed as a resignation or forced resignation. They went on to say that the future involvement of Hooper “is no longer under consideration at this time.”
The development in open-air has opened a chasm in Triple M’s league coverage leading to the NRL Finals Series.
Sources within the network are now reviewing who may move in to take Hooper’s former sideline commentator role.
Where does this leave his media career?
James Hooper’s media future is now uncertain.
With no current television or radio jobs in sight, this can be his biggest professional setback.
Media analysts foresee his return to mainstream coverage as a near impossibility in the immediate future.
However, others feel that Hooper could perhaps still carve a niche via digital platforms or independent commentary.
Acting chief rugby league reporter for Fox Sports since 2016.
He had fashioned a well-known name for himself across TV, print and radio, greatly respected for the access he maintained to NRL insiders.
But this recent bout has considerably chipped away at his standing in the Australian sports media world.
If he has the guts to take responsibility and move towards rehabilitation, there could still be space for a late career return.
The public nature of his sacking and the gravity of the drink-driving charge, however, create major stumbling blocks.

Final thoughts
This was a fall from grace for James Hooper’s sacking by Fox Sports over drink-driving charges.
His reading of 0.253 was shocking to everyone, both colleagues and fans, especially since he had sort of declared himself guilty in the past.
The journalist has offered public apologies, taken full responsibility, and is now trying to keep a low profile.
With the days drawing nearer to the actual court date, the legal consequences and more personal scrutiny will follow.
Presently, he is not on any media platform anywhere, allowing him to now concentrate on his family, his health, and the legal proceedings.
His ultimate return to NRL media or elsewhere hinges on whatever choice he will make next.
