Smith represented England from 1988 to 1996, a period noted for strong fast bowling across world cricket. He made 62 Test appearances and scored 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67. He produced nine centuries and was widely recognised for his composure and strength at the crease.
One of his finest innings came in Antigua in 1994, where he struck 175 against a West Indies attack known for its pace. That performance reinforced his reputation as one of England’s most reliable batters against short-pitched bowling.

Smith also played 71 ODIs and was part of the England team that reached the 1992 World Cup final. His unbeaten 167 against Australia in 1993 at Edgbaston stood as England’s highest ODI score until 2016.
