Coles Supermarkets Battles Empty Shelves and Supply Challenges as Percy Pig Makes Australian Debut

Coles supermarkets across Australia face ongoing supply disruptions that have left many shelves stripped bare. These shortages have sparked public concern and calls for buying limits. At the same time, Coles has brought a new arrival to its shelves with the launch of the iconic UK confectionery brand, Percy Pig, marking a significant development amid supply challenges.

Coles Introduces Iconic Percy Pig Range

Alongside addressing supply challenges, Coles has expanded its product range with the arrival of Percy Pig confectionery. From November 19, 2025, Coles stores nationwide stock a selection of Marks & Spencer’s popular M&S Food lines, including Percy Pig. This launch marks the first time the UK brand’s iconic confectionery is available in Australian bricks-and-mortar stores, following a partnership between Coles and Marks & Spencer (M&S).

The Percy Pig range includes several variants: Original Percy Pig Fruit Gums, Percy Pig Phizzy Pigtails, Percy Pig Piglets, and Reversy Percy. Each pack is priced around $6.00. The chewy confectionery, shaped like pink pig faces and made from real fruit juice with no artificial flavourings, is vegan-friendly. In addition to Percy Pig, M&S Food products such as Colin the Caterpillar confectionery, Scottish Shortbread, and Luxury Gold Tea will also be available. The range will expand to over 200 products in 2026, including seasonal items.

Supply Shortages Impact Multiple Products

Customers report empty aisles in numerous Coles stores nationwide. Staples such as eggs, fresh produce, bakery items, and frozen foods show limited availability. These constraints stem from multiple factors, including adverse weather events, supply chain interruptions, and increased consumer demand. Coles has acknowledged these short-term shortages and responded by imposing purchase limits on key products to manage demand. For example, frozen potato chips and eggs face caps ranging from two per customer to varying state-specific rules.

Weather and Supply Chain Challenges

Severe weather conditions are a major contributor to the current shortages. Recent heavy rainfall, flooding in critical agricultural regions, and the effects of Tropical Cyclone Alfred have damaged crops and interrupted harvests. Such events have reduced supply levels for fruits like blueberries and vegetables such as broccoli. Along with pandemic-related supply chain pressures, these factors have limited Coles’ ability to restock items like chocolate-iced donuts and other processed foods.

Public and Industry Response: Calls for Buying Limits

The empty shelves have triggered widespread calls for the introduction of national buying limits on high-demand products. Shoppers urge Coles and other supermarket chains to implement restrictions to prevent panic buying and hoarding. Suggestions include banning multi-buy promotions that encourage bulk purchases and establishing clear purchase limits to ensure fair access. Industry experts highlight the necessity of coordinated retailer, supplier, and government strategies to protect food security.

Community Support and Corporate Commitment

Coles has also taken steps to support communities affected by recent weather events. The company donated food supplies valued at $100,000 to flood-impacted areas in Far North Queensland. Coles continues cooperation with suppliers and local authorities to improve stock replenishment and distribution.

Consumer Guidance and Outlook

Despite continuing supply issues, Coles assures that shortages are temporary. It expects stock levels to improve as weather conditions stabilise and supply chains recover. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase responsibly to help maintain equitable access. Coles maintains close monitoring of supply and demand to adjust purchase limits when necessary.
