The Australian government has rolled out a comprehensive suite of Centrelink payment increases affecting more than one million Australians from January 1, 2026. Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek confirmed the indexation adjustment will provide meaningful financial relief to students, apprentices, and caregivers across the nation. This marks the annual update to social security payment rates designed to maintain the purchasing power of government support payments.

Centrelink changes for Australians in 2026
Youth Allowance Recipients See Increased Fortnightly Payments
Young Australians pursuing full-time study now receive enhanced financial support through the updated Youth Allowance rates. A single adult living away from home without dependent children will receive a maximum fortnightly payment of $684.20, representing an increase of $13.90. This adjustment enables students to better manage their living expenses while completing their education qualifications.
The government also increased income thresholds for student payments across the board. Parental income test limits for Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY have been adjusted upward, making it easier for more students from modest family backgrounds to qualify for assistance. These threshold increases directly improve access to support for young people whose parents earn below the revised limits.
Austudy and ABSTUDY Students Gain Additional Fortnightly Assistance
Austudy recipients without children now receive $677.20 per fortnight, reflecting a $13.90 increase from the previous rate. Students with dependent children qualifying under Austudy receive $854.20 fortnightly. ABSTUDY Living Allowance rates have similarly increased across all family situations, benefiting Indigenous and non-Indigenous students pursuing accredited courses and qualifications.
The increased ABSTUDY rates apply to students living at home, students living away from home, and master’s and doctoral candidates undertaking advanced research. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students pursuing vocational education or university qualifications benefit from the broader indexation adjustment ensuring their payments maintain adequate value.
Carer Allowance Reaches $162.60 per Fortnight for 680,000 Recipients
Approximately 680,000 Australian carers have received a boost to their Carer Allowance payments from January 1. The fortnightly rate now stands at $162.60, an increase of $3.30 from the previous amount. This payment recognises the significant contribution unpaid carers make to the community by providing essential daily care for family members and loved ones.
Carers receive the Carer Allowance payment in addition to any Carer Supplement payments and other social security benefits they may be entitled to receive. The payment is not subject to income tax and does not count as assessable income for taxation purposes. The indexation adjustment also applies to carers receiving multiple payments simultaneously.

Youth Disability Support Pension Recipients Benefit from Annual Adjustment
Young people receiving Youth Disability Support Pension have also experienced payment increases through the standard indexation process. This payment supports young Australians aged 16 to 21 years experiencing disability or health conditions that prevent them from working or studying. The adjustment ensures these vulnerable young people maintain adequate financial support to meet their essential needs.
Three-Day Childcare Guarantee Commences January 5, 2026
Complementing the Centrelink payment increases, the government implemented the three-day childcare guarantee beginning January 5. Eligible families now access 72 hours of subsidised childcare per fortnight, equivalent to three full days per week. The government eliminated the activity test that previously required parents to demonstrate work or study commitments to qualify for subsidised childcare support.
This policy change allows over 100,000 additional families to access subsidised childcare services. Families earning between $100,000 and $250,000 annually face average annual savings of $1,460 through the expanded subsidy scheme. Some families qualify for 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight based on parental work engagement or exemption categories. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children also become eligible for 100 hours of subsidised childcare per fortnight under the new arrangements.

Income Thresholds and Means Testing Parameters Updated
The government adjusted income thresholds and means-testing parameters alongside the payment rate increases. These adjustments to the income-free areas, partner income limits, and parental income thresholds allow more families and individuals to qualify for Centrelink support. The updated parameters reflect indexation in line with inflation and cost-of-living movements experienced throughout 2025.

Timing of Payment Changes and Reporting Requirements
Recipients should anticipate their increased payments appearing in their nominated bank accounts from January 1. Those receiving fortnightly payments will see the new amounts in their next scheduled payment after the indexation date. Individuals with reporting obligations must continue following their normal reporting schedules, which Services Australia confirms via their online accounts and myGov portals.
Broader Support Package Context
The Centrelink payment increases form part of a broader government support package implemented in January 2026. Additional measures include mandatory cash acceptance at grocery retailers and fuel stations for transactions up to $500, increased Medicare Safety Net thresholds, and reduced pharmaceutical benefits prices for prescribed medications. These complementary measures target cost-of-living pressures affecting Australian households and workers.
The government indicated further major changes will commence throughout 2026, including payday superannuation implementation in July and additional tax reductions benefiting 14 million taxpayers. These staged reforms reflect the government’s commitment to progressively support Australian workers, students, and families navigating economic challenges
